Four Skateboarders from Calgary Recognized for Their Bravery in Protecting a Woman

In a world where many might turn a blind eye to danger, four young skateboarders from Calgary showed incredible courage and heart. These teenagers didn’t hesitate when they saw someone in need, stepping in to protect a young woman from a potentially harmful situation. Their bravery has not gone unnoticed—they were honored with a prestigious Chief’s Award for Bravery by the Calgary Police Service.

The Late-Night Incident

The story began on a late night in April 2015. Four friends—Kyle Tenove, Warren Churchill, Clay Stein, and Josh Hunter—were out skating in downtown Calgary when they noticed something that didn’t sit right. They saw a young woman walking alone, and it was clear she was distressed. As they got closer, the skateboarders realized that the woman appeared to be intoxicated and was being harassed by an aggressive man.

Things quickly escalated as the man began to push the woman toward a nearby alley. The teenagers, who were just out enjoying the night, saw the danger she was in. Without thinking twice, they knew they had to act.

“We didn’t even think about it. We just knew we had to step in,” said Warren Churchill, one of the teens who acted quickly to help the woman. The skateboarders didn’t waste time. They confronted the man, creating enough of a distraction to break up his attempt to force the woman into the alley. Their bold presence scared the man off, and he ran away.

But the teens didn’t stop there. They didn’t just leave the woman in the street. They stayed by her side, making sure she was safe, and waited with her until the police arrived.

Quick Thinking Saves the Day

The quick thinking and bravery shown by Kyle, Warren, Clay, and Josh that night could have made all the difference. Their timely intervention prevented what could have been a dangerous or even life-threatening situation for the young woman.

After the incident, the police officers praised the teenagers for their actions. “What these young men did was nothing short of heroic,” said one of the officers. “They didn’t hesitate, they didn’t wait to see what would happen. They acted swiftly to make sure the woman was safe. Their bravery is something we should all strive to emulate.”

The skateboarders’ decision to step in may have been instinctual, but their maturity and sense of responsibility were clear. They risked their own safety to help someone in need, and in doing so, showed compassion and courage beyond their years.

Recognition for Their Bravery

A year later, the Calgary Police Service recognized the skateboarders’ bravery at an official ceremony. The Chief’s Award for Bravery is one of the highest honors given to civilians, and it is awarded to individuals who display extraordinary acts of courage and selflessness.

The four teens received their awards with pride. For them, it wasn’t about the recognition, but about doing what felt right in the moment. “We didn’t do it for the awards. We just did what we thought needed to be done,” said Kyle Tenove, one of the skateboarders.

Their actions weren’t just heroic—they were also a powerful reminder of the impact bystanders can have. Too often, people are afraid to get involved when they witness someone in danger. But these four friends proved that stepping in could make a world of difference.

A Powerful Reminder

The story of Kyle, Warren, Clay, and Josh is a lesson for us all. It shows that when we see someone in need, we have the power to help. Whether it’s stopping an act of harassment, calling for help, or just offering support, our actions can stop harm before it happens.

In today’s world, where violence and harassment are still all too common, the skateboarders’ decision to intervene highlights how much courage it takes to act. Their bravery is not just about one night—it’s a reminder that we all have a role to play in keeping our communities safe.

The Calgary Police Service hopes that the recognition of these four young men will inspire others to act when they see someone in danger. “This kind of bravery is something we want to encourage in our city,” said the Chief of Police. “We hope others will follow their example and step in when they see something wrong.”

A Beacon of Hope

In a world where stories of indifference can sometimes dominate the news, the actions of these four teenagers shine as a beacon of hope. They remind us that courage, kindness, and a willingness to stand up for others can change lives. Small acts of bravery can make a profound impact, and Kyle, Warren, Clay, and Josh showed us all what it means to be heroes in everyday life.
