Music is like its own language, speaking to us all in a unique way. For as long as humans have had ears to listen, music has played a huge role in our lives. It stirs up powerful emotions, inspires us, and leaves a lasting impact. While musical styles change over time, some songs remain timeless, touching hearts even decades after they were first written.
One perfect example of a timeless song is “You Raise Me Up.” Originally released in 2001, this beloved classic has been covered by many artists, including Josh Groban in 2003 and Westlife in 2005. If you haven’t heard it, you really should! The fact that it’s been covered by over 100 artists shows just how powerful and enduring it is.
But among all the versions of this beautiful ballad, there’s one that stands out as particularly haunting and stunning: the rendition by Brigham Young University’s Vocal Point.
BYU Vocal Point is a nine-member a cappella group that was founded in 1991 by BYU students Dave Boyce and Bob Ahlander. The group quickly became immensely popular on campus and even placed fifth in the third season of NBC’s “The Sing-Off.”
In 2018, BYU Vocal Point signed a record deal with Universal Music Group’s classical label, Decca Gold. Jason Bromley, one of the group’s members, said, “We’re ordinary college students doing extraordinary things.”
Their cover of “You Raise Me Up” is a true showcase of their incredible talent. The video for the song features the group singing in a breathtaking mountainous landscape, blending their harmonies beautifully.
