The Rise and Fall of Ali MacGraw: A Star’s Journey
Ali MacGraw, a name once echoing through the grand halls of Hollywood, became a superstar almost overnight. However, just as swiftly as she climbed to the top, she vanished from the limelight, leaving many to wonder what happened to the captivating actress.
Today, at 84 years old, Ali has chosen a peaceful life in a tiny, remote town, embracing the beauty of aging with her silver hair flowing gracefully. But her story begins far from this serene setting.
Early Life: A Journey Through Struggles
Ali MacGraw was born as Elizabeth Alice MacGraw on April 1, 1939, in Pound Ridge, New York. She came from a family of artists; her mother, Frances, was an artist who taught in Paris before settling in Greenwich Village, while her father, Richard, also pursued art. However, Richard’s past was troubled. Having grown up in an orphanage, he ran away to sea at 16 and later studied art in Munich.
“Daddy was frightened and really, really angry. He never forgave his real parents for giving him up,” Ali shared, reflecting on her father’s turbulent emotions.
With financial struggles looming, the family moved into a shared house on a wilderness preserve in Pound Ridge. The living conditions were challenging.
“There were no doors; we shared the kitchen and bathroom with them,” Ali recalled. “It was utter lack of privacy. It was horrible.”
Despite the challenges, Ali’s mother worked multiple art assignments, but Richard struggled to sell his paintings. His frustrations sometimes turned into anger directed at his children, particularly Ali’s brother, Richard Jr.
“On good days he was great, but on bad days he was horrendous,” she remembered. “Daddy would beat my brother up, badly. I was witness to it, and it was terrible.”
Growing up surrounded by creativity, Ali found her passion in the arts. She earned a scholarship to the prep school Rosemary Hall and later attended Wellesley College. At 22, she moved to New York City, where she began her career as an assistant editor at Harper’s Bazaar.
The Fashion World: A Sparkling Beginning
In the bustling fashion scene, Ali caught the eye of legendary fashion editor Diana Vreeland, who brought her on as a stylist. Ali described her new role humorously, saying, “It was ‘Girl! Get me a pencil!’” The fast-paced world of fashion kept her on her toes, often working late into the night.
“She would come in at eight a.m., and many times I’d come back at one in the morning, and she would still be doing things for the next day,” recalled Ruth Ansel, a former art director.
Ali’s stunning looks soon led her to the modeling world, where she graced magazine covers and appeared in television commercials. However, a memorable encounter with the famous artist Salvador Dali pushed her toward acting. After an odd moment where Dali attempted to suck her toes during a photoshoot, Ali decided she wanted to be in front of the camera as an actress.
Acting Career: A Meteoric Rise
Ali’s transition from stylist to actress was nothing short of spectacular. With no formal training, she brought a raw, captivating energy to the screen. Her first film role was a small part in A Lovely Way to Die (1968), but it was her leading role in Goodbye, Columbus (1969) that truly launched her career, earning her a Golden Globe for Most Promising Newcomer.
The following year, she landed the role that would define her legacy: Jenny in Love Story. After reading the script, Ali was moved to tears. “I read it and wept twice because of how much I loved it,” she said. She arranged a meeting with the film’s producer, Robert Evans, who not only saw her potential but also fell for her charm.
Love Story premiered in 1970 and quickly became a blockbuster, becoming the number one film in the U.S. and one of the highest-grossing films of all time. Ali received an Academy Award nomination for her performance, solidifying her status as a Hollywood star.
“Love means never having to say you’re sorry,” became an iconic line from the film, resonating with audiences everywhere.
Love and Heartbreak: A Turbulent Personal Life
With success came the pressures of fame and complicated relationships. Ali married Robert Evans in 1969, and two years later, they welcomed their son, Josh. But Ali’s marriage faced trials when she met the charismatic Steve McQueen while filming The Getaway.
“I looked in those blue eyes, and my knees started knocking,” she recalled. Their affair blossomed, and Ali left Evans to be with McQueen, despite knowing his troubled past.
“Steve was this very original, principled guy who didn’t seem to be part of the system, and I loved that,” Ali reflected. However, McQueen’s insecurities led to conflicts, especially regarding Ali’s career. He wanted her to be home, cooking dinner, rather than pursuing her passion.
“Steve’s idea of hot was not me. He liked blond bimbos, and they were always around,” she admitted. The relationship became toxic, leading Ali into a dark phase of addiction and emotional turmoil.
The Downfall: A Sudden Exit from Stardom
The turning point came while filming Convoy in 1978, where Ali arrived on set under the influence. Recognizing the need for change, she quit drugs and sought help, checking herself into the Betty Ford Clinic. “The worst stuff happened when I drank,” she admitted. “I lost my judgment; I fancied other women’s husbands.”
As she battled her demons, Ali faced a harsh reality—her career in Hollywood was fading. Many of her films flopped, leaving her feeling lost and unwanted. “It’s brutal for women,” she lamented. “There’s not just one thing I love to do and feel bereft if I can’t.”
New Beginnings: A Life of Service
After her recovery, Ali found solace in community service and interior design, stepping away from the bright lights of Hollywood. In 1993, she faced another tragedy when her house burned down in a wildfire. This loss prompted her to move to a quiet village near Santa Fe, New Mexico.
“I live in a little village north of Santa Fe called Tesuque,” she revealed. In her new home, Ali embraced a life of anonymity, focusing on volunteer work and her love for animals. Her neighbors appreciated her contributions, recognizing her not as a faded star but as a dedicated community member.
Though she stepped away from acting, Ali returned to the stage in 2006 for a Broadway adaptation of Festen, reuniting with Ryan O’Neal. Outside of theater, she created successful yoga videos, channeling her creativity into new endeavors.
“I’m open and curious,” she said in 2019, “I know that I’m not happy when I’m not doing something creative.”
A Family Legacy: Josh Evans
Ali’s son, Josh Evans, followed in her footsteps, carving his own path in Hollywood as an actor and director. Born in January 1971, he embraced show business from an early age. Josh recalled his first big break: “I wanted to play that part in Born on the Fourth of July, and I got the part. It was very exciting and you could feel how special that movie was going to be.”
Throughout his career, Josh has starred in notable films and directed several projects. “I am definitely more comfortable on the side of the camera that does not show myself,” he admitted, showcasing his passion for storytelling behind the scenes.
Despite their busy careers, Ali remains close to her family, cherishing her time with her son and his young family. “He’s my favorite human being on the planet,” Ali said about Josh, beaming with pride.
The Future: A Legacy of Resilience
Now, Ali MacGraw’s life is a tapestry of triumphs and tribulations, marked by resilience and transformation. Her journey from a bright star in Hollywood to a humble community member showcases her ability to adapt and find peace. As she continues to embrace new adventures, one can’t help but wonder: will we see Ali and Josh share the screen again?
