For many animals, fur is essential, providing insulation from the cold and giving them their distinctive looks. Some creatures are so dependent on their fur that you might not even recognize them if they were fully bald. Imagine stumbling upon a hairless version of an animal you’re used to seeing furry!
Recently, a very rare and unusual animal was rescued—a creature that, at first glance, might look like a hairless cat. But as you read on, you’ll discover the incredible story of this animal and her surprising fight for survival.
Last month, a strange rescue took place at Hope for Wildlife, a conservation group in Nova Scotia. A couple living in West Arichat found a mysterious, hairless creature struggling in the cold in their backyard. Unsure of what it was, they called for help. According to the Canadian Press, when rescuers arrived, they couldn’t believe their eyes.
At first, the animal looked like a Sphynx cat, a breed known for its lack of fur. But upon closer inspection, they realized it wasn’t a cat at all—it was a raccoon! A completely bald raccoon!
Without its trademark fur and the dark mask-like markings around its eyes, identifying the creature was difficult. This small raccoon, a northern species, had a severe case of alopecia, a condition that had caused it to lose all its fur.
Balding raccoons have been spotted before, but never quite like this one. The rescue team was stunned. “It’s just tufts of fur around the snout, ankles, and feet,” said Hope Swinimer, the director of Hope for Wildlife, in an interview with the Canadian Press. “It’s a serious case.”
The team decided to name the female raccoon “Rufus,” after the hairless naked mole rat character from the Kim Possible cartoon. Despite her gender, the name stuck because it suited her unusual appearance.
On Facebook, the rescue organization shared that they were still trying to figure out what caused Rufus’s hair loss. They suspected it might be an autoimmune disorder affecting her hair follicles. However, they had already ruled out other possible causes like fungal infections, mange, and parasites. Fortunately, her skin appeared healthy, which was a positive sign.
What really amazed the rescuers was how Rufus had survived without her fur for so long. Raccoons depend on their thick coats to stay warm and protect their skin from the harsh elements. Yet, Rufus had somehow made it through a winter without freezing or suffering from frostbite.
“We’re astonished that this little lady survived the winter without fur and without getting frostbite or worse!” the rescue team posted on Facebook.
Despite the hardships she had faced, Rufus had a fighting spirit. “She’s quite feisty,” the rescue team noted, adding that her personality was one of the reasons she survived so long. When she first arrived at the shelter, she was in bad shape, weak and tired from her struggles. But soon enough, her fierce side began to show.
“For a few brief hours, we were worried,” Swinimer explained. “But then, she perked up, got hungry, and came out. There’s been a huge improvement since she first arrived. She’s much more lively and feisty now.”
Given her condition, Rufus may end up staying at the shelter permanently. Hope for Wildlife is prepared to give her a home that will meet all her needs. She will have a specially designed habitat with plenty of cozy spots to keep warm, including outdoor areas with hideaways, hammocks, and nesting boxes where she can feel safe.
“We’ve never seen a raccoon without fur before!” Swinimer said with amazement. Rufus’s ability to survive in the wild without her fur is nothing short of a miracle. The team is grateful that she was found when she was and can now live in comfort and safety.
Thanks to the dedicated care she’s receiving, Rufus’s future looks much brighter!
