Hurricane Helene has caused incredible devastation, leaving at least 135 people dead, with the Carolinas being hit the hardest. Among the victims were 7-year-old Micah Drye and his grandparents, who lived in Asheville, North Carolina. They were tragically swept away by powerful floodwaters after seeking safety on a rooftop.
While Megan Drye, Micah’s mother, managed to survive, she had to face the unthinkable heartbreak of losing both her son and her parents in the same disaster.
Megan’s sister, Jessica Drye Turner, took to social media to share the family’s heartbreaking story. She revealed Micah’s heartbreaking final words as the floodwaters surrounded them: “Jesus! Please help me!” In her post, Jessica expressed the intense grief they were all feeling, but also the strength they were finding in their faith.
She wrote, “New grief and strong faith. New motto.” It was clear the family was holding on to faith in the middle of their unbearable pain.
Micah’s body was later found about a quarter mile away from where Megan had been rescued. The storm had separated them, leaving a devastating path in its wake.
To support Megan, who lost everything in the hurricane, another sister, Heather Kephart, set up a GoFundMe page. The page includes a touching final photo of Micah, showing him smiling in a Jurassic World T-shirt. The picture was taken by his grandmother before the tragedy struck, capturing a happy moment before the unimaginable loss.
As the communities affected by the storm start the long process of recovery, the Drye family’s story is just one of many heartbreaking losses brought by Hurricane Helene. But despite the devastation, families like theirs will need to find the strength to heal and move forward in the face of such overwhelming pain.
