The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) has arrested a man in the Woodland Hills neighborhood of Los Angeles on suspicion of starting the Kenneth Fire. This dangerous wildfire is now spreading toward Hidden Hills and Calabasas, driven by powerful winds.
Authorities have confirmed that the fire was intentionally ignited, and the suspect is believed to be responsible. Charles Dinsel, a senior lead officer with the LAPD, shared his insights with NewsNation: “What we know at this time is that the incident began here, and approximately 20 to 30 minutes later, a suspect was apprehended by local residents in the Woodland Hills area.”
The Kenneth Fire has already burned through over 950 acres, leaving a trail of destruction. Residents in the area acted quickly when they noticed something suspicious. According to Fox News, around 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, near the intersection of Arcos Drive and Galendo Street, locals spotted a man riding a bicycle while carrying a lit torch. Witnesses saw him trying to set fire to old Christmas trees and garbage cans.
One of the residents, who wished to remain anonymous, described the scene: “I saw him with that torch, and it just didn’t sit right with me. When he started going for the trash cans, I knew we had to act fast.” The quick-thinking residents intervened, restraining the man and using zip ties to secure him until the police arrived.
The suspect’s identity has not yet been revealed, and investigators are now working to determine if he has any connection to other recent fires in the area. Initially, the LAPD stated, “At this moment, we cannot definitively determine where or how the series of fires originated, but an investigation is underway.”
