The 2024 Oscars took place last night, and as always, the red carpet was packed with celebrities dressed in their finest! Everyone was eager to show off their best looks for one of Hollywood’s biggest nights. But something unusual caught people’s attention… Keep reading to find out more.
Last night at the Oscars, singer Billie Eilish and her brother, producer Finneas, along with actors Mark Ruffalo, Ava DuVernay, Ramy Youssef, and Quannah Chasinghorse, were all spotted wearing a mysterious pin on their outfits.
Even actor Mahershala Ali, who didn’t walk the red carpet but introduced the nominees for Best Supporting Actor on stage, was seen wearing the pin. Since none of these celebrities seemed to be part of the same project, it left many people wondering what the pin symbolized. The pin was a circular red badge with a small black heart and the outline of a hand around it.
A lot of people were curious about what the pin meant. The celebrities wore these pins to support the call for a ceasefire in Israel’s war on Gaza. Since Israel launched its war on Gaza, Palestinian health authorities report that over 30,000 people have been killed since October 7th. Tragically, many of those killed have been children, as nearly half of Gaza’s population are children under 18 years old.
As the conflict continues, people are rallying more than ever for a ceasefire in the region. Artists in Hollywood and beyond have joined the call for peace. Over 400 celebrities have joined the Artists4Ceasefire campaign, which published a letter in late October urging President Joe Biden and the US Congress to call for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and Israel.
Unlike the Time’s Up movement pins worn by nearly every celebrity on the red carpet in 2018, the ceasefire pins were only worn by a few celebrities at the 2024 Oscars. Earlier this year, at the Grammy Awards, only Boygenius and Annie Lennox were seen wearing the same pins, with Lennox notably pleading for a ceasefire on stage.
Actors Milo Machado-Graner and Swann Arlaud, who starred in the film Anatomy of a Fall, were also seen wearing pins of the Palestinian flag on the red carpet.
Ramy Youssef, a comedian and actor who co-starred in Poor Things alongside Emma Stone and Mark Ruffalo, expressed his frustration with the lack of progress in calling for a ceasefire and ending the war against Gaza.
“There’s no other route,” Youssef said in an interview, referring to the call for a ceasefire. “It’s taking so long… That’s what we’re all encouraging everyone to be vocal about.”
Other stars who signed the Artists4Ceasefire letter included Cate Blanchett, Ben Affleck, Jennifer Lopez, Bradley Cooper, and America Ferrera.
Now we know why some artists were wearing those pins. Share this with others so they can understand the message behind those pins too!
