Orchestras are typically associated with a serious atmosphere, but there’s always room for lighthearted moments in any setting. In a video that has gained viral attention since 2019, conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin experiences the surprise of a lifetime while leading the Philadelphia Orchestra, and his reaction is genuinely heartwarming. It happened to be Yannick’s 44th birthday, and as he had to spend it working, his student musicians decided to play a sweet birthday prank on him.
In the footage, Yannick is seen conducting the orchestra at the 2019 All-City High School Music Festival. Suddenly, the musicians stop following his lead, and he lowers his baton in confusion. As the familiar melody of “Happy Birthday To You” fills the air, he realizes he’s been tricked and leans over the podium, bursting into laughter.
Is there a more delightful way to surprise a conductor? We think not! Witness Yannick’s heartwarming reaction in the video below.
