A Brave Journey: Jennie’s Story
Pregnancy can be a very challenging time for women. Along with the physical changes of carrying a baby, there’s always a worry that something could go wrong. But luckily, for most, the anxiety transforms into relief the moment they can hold their healthy newborn in their arms.
But Jennie Wilklow wasn’t so fortunate.
At the start of her pregnancy, everything seemed good. Jennie and her husband waited excitedly for the arrival of their first child. They went for check-ups and were always assured that their baby girl was thriving. But as Jennie approached her due date, their world turned upside down when complications arose.
On the day of her emergency C-section, at just 34 weeks, Jennie felt nervous but hopeful. “When they took her out, I heard her scream, and they said, ‘She is so beautiful,’” Jennie recalls. Those words filled her with joy. She smiled and felt a wave of relief wash over her. But in an instant, that joy soured.
Suddenly, Jennie saw panic spreading among the nurses and doctors. Her heart sank as she watched her newborn’s face change. “They did everything to help her, but her skin became rock hard in seconds,” Jennie remembered with a heavy heart.
“After the skin solidified, it began to crack, causing open wounds all over her body.” Her heart raced as she tried to understand what was happening. “I looked at the doctors and asked, ‘Is everything okay?’”
The doctor reassured her, saying, “We have it under control,” but Jennie couldn’t shake her fear. Before she knew it, she was given a sedative and fell asleep. When she woke up hours later, a doctor delivered the shocking news: her beautiful daughter, Anna, suffered from Harlequin ichthyosis.
Stunned, Jennie turned to her husband, searching for answers in his silence. “My husband’s silence scared me; he was just in shock,” she shared. All he could say was, “This is bad.”
Harlequin ichthyosis is a severe genetic skin condition that causes the skin to grow about 14 times faster than normal. It makes the skin red and can affect the eyes, mouth, nose, and ears.
Children born with this condition often face severe challenges, with many not surviving past their first few days. Those who do survive can lead relatively normal lives but may experience complications and delays in motor skills.
“I spent the next two days searching for information about her condition,” Jennie confessed. “It was heart-wrenching to realize the struggles Anna would face. At that moment, I even thought, ‘Maybe it would be better if she didn’t have to suffer.’”
But Anna proved to be a strong little fighter. With the support of doctors and her loving family, she hung on and grew stronger every day. Eventually, Jennie and her husband brought Anna home, ready to care for their precious daughter.
In those first days, Jennie dedicated herself to Anna’s care. “Every two hours, I covered her with petroleum jelly and bathed her for hours,” she explained. “For years, I had dreamed about dressing my daughter, and while it may seem trivial, that became my biggest goal.”
As time went on, Jennie began to see things differently. Anna inspired her to embrace life with open arms. “I realized that if I limited what she could achieve, it would hold her back. That’s when I decided to raise the bar high for both of us,” she said with determination. “I wanted Anna to pursue her dreams, just like I would for myself.”
To share their journey and inspire others, Jennie started an Instagram account. “I understand now that I was meant to be Anna’s mom. She was destined for me, and I for her,” she shared passionately. “Together, we will show the world how beautiful life can be!”
Jennie’s openness about her struggles and triumphs means so much. She believes that not everyone looks the same or has the same experiences, and that’s perfectly okay. Each person is unique, and that diversity is what makes the world so wonderful.
It takes courage to share such personal stories, and by doing so, Jennie hopes to encourage others to embrace their differences and find beauty in every moment.

I think this mom and dad deserve a lot of bravery. And the medical department that was there for them.
