Vincent Dashukewich from Connecticut, USA, steps outside with his dog. Then something unexpected happens.
His furry friend detects an unfamiliar scent and growls toward the pool. Vincent checks and makes an amazing discovery.
A Big, Chubby Visitor
Under the edge of the pool, there’s a hollow space. It’s actually a remnant of a larger pit in which the pool now stands.
From this hollow space, Vincent is met with two attentive eyes. They don’t belong to a human or a dog but to a full-grown black bear.
“I was really shocked. He was staring right at me, and I didn’t know what to do. First, I decided to bring my dog inside for safety,”
Vincent explains.
Lounging is Lovely
The black bear seems to have chosen this spot to spend the winter. As a guest of Vincent’s family, he now has a name: Marty.
Like most black bears, Marty doesn’t undergo true hibernation but enters a period of winter dormancy. This is why he takes notice of Vincent’s presence.
However, the black bear is so drowsy that he’s unfazed by the presence of a human.
He doesn’t exhibit any aggression and shows no intention of leaving his cozy spot.
What to Do? Nothing or Honk Away
Vincent still isn’t sure what to do with his bear guest. He contacts the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection.
They advise him not to do anything and leave the bear in peace. Most likely, Marty will eventually wander off on his own.
If he must be scared off immediately, the experts recommend using a horn and bright lights from a distance.
If that doesn’t work, wildlife experts can handle the situation. So far, Vincent has decided to leave Marty right where he is.
