The Night That Changed Everything
Sometimes, just being in the right place at the right time isn’t enough. It takes courage to stand up for those who are weak and in need, especially when it means facing danger.
On one seemingly ordinary night, four friends—Arnaud Nimenya, Carsyn Wright, James Hielema, and Starlyn Rives-Perez—were enjoying a fun evening skateboarding in an underground parking lot. But what started as a typical outing quickly turned into a shocking experience they would never forget.
As they skated around, they noticed something strange. An older man dressed nicely was pulling a young girl, who looked about fifteen years old, through the parking lot. She was clearly drunk. The boys were taken aback, sensing that something terrible was happening.
The girl, in bad shape, was stumbling and crying out, “I just want to go home!” Her clothes were dirty, and her arms were scratched.
The man claimed to be her father, but the boys weren’t convinced. “You really don’t want to imagine the worst of someone like that,” Carsyn said, frowning. “You just brush it off and hope for the best because you don’t want that situation to be real.” Feeling uneasy, they decided to step back for a moment, not wanting to make things worse.
Despite their hesitation, the boys couldn’t shake the feeling that they needed to help, so they turned back to check on the girl. And what they saw horrified them.
As they approached, they found the man attacking the girl. “You freeze when you see something like that,” Arnaud recalled, his voice trembling. “You don’t know what to do.” But deep inside, they knew they had to act.
Without thinking about their own safety, the boys charged toward the attacker. He tried to escape, darting out of the parking lot, but Arnaud felt a surge of determination. “He was trying to leave, but I thought, ‘I can’t let him get away with this!’” He bravely pushed through, even as the man violently shoved him aside.
The fight escalated as the man began to swing one of their skateboards at them. “It felt like we were in a movie,” James described later. “But it was real, and we couldn’t just stand by.” The boys fought hard, refusing to let the man harm the girl any longer.
Just when things seemed dire, the sound of sirens filled the air. The police arrived right on time, rushing into the scene and quickly taking control of the situation. The boys felt a wave of relief wash over them as they knew the girl was safe now.
After everything settled down, the police wanted to recognize the boys for their bravery. They were invited to the Chief’s Awards Gala, where they would receive honors for their courage. “What you did was unbelievable,” the police chief told them.
“You put your lives on the line to protect someone who needed help. You are true heroes.”
That night, Arnaud, Carsyn, James, and Starlyn not only stood up for the girl but also became role models for everyone around them. Their actions sparked pride in their community, showing that young people can make a big difference.
The boys learned that real strength comes from caring for others, and they will always remember the bravery they found that night.
