Dogs are our most loyal friends in the animal kingdom, always there for us. In families with children, they become integral members of the community, while for older individuals, they serve as crucial companions in the battle against loneliness and boredom. Naturally, it is important to do everything possible for the health of our four-legged companions, ensuring they enjoy a long and happy life by our side. Here are some of the most popular home remedies:
Apples for Dogs?
When a dog eats an apple, it doesn’t mean they’re on the path to becoming a vegan. However, apples are a genuine vitamin bomb for your pet’s health. They contain not only a variety of vitamins but also plenty of minerals beneficial for digestion. If your dog experiences diarrhea, you can grate an apple with its skin and let it sit for a while. If the apple shows a slight brownish discoloration, simply mix it into the food or give it to your pet directly. This aids in improving digestion. Additionally, apples help combat unpleasant breath and clean the gaps between teeth.
Note:
If your dog’s mild symptoms do not improve, a visit to the vet is strongly recommended. The suggested home remedies should not replace proper medical treatment but rather contribute to overall health. As veterinary treatment can sometimes be expensive, we recommend getting dog health insurance to protect against unforeseen vet costs.
Marigold as a Healing Plant
With its vibrant yellow and orange flowers, the marigold is a striking plant. It is considered the most important healing plant, acting as an anti-inflammatory, reducing swelling, and exhibiting antibacterial properties. Marigold is applied externally and is available in pharmacies in ointment form. For minor inflammations or wounds, you can prepare a wound wash or compress using fresh leaves or dried flowers. Simply pour two teaspoons of flowers over a quarter-liter of water, let it steep covered for ten minutes, and then strain.
Dandelion – More Than Just Annoying Weed?
While it may be annoying in the garden, the dandelion is a useful medicinal plant. It has better properties than you might think and is ideal for a spring detox. Its effects are blood-purifying, diuretic, and stimulating for the liver, gallbladder, and kidneys – essentially an internal organ cleanser. Over a few weeks, you can mix a few young, finely chopped leaves into your dog’s food.
Apple Cider Vinegar for Wound Healing
What works as a home remedy for us can also be used for dogs. Apple cider vinegar has been used as a remedy since ancient Greek and Roman times. Mixing a splash of apple cider vinegar into your dog’s food ensures a shiny coat. Furthermore, it strengthens the immune system and the intestinal flora. Apple cider vinegar has an antiseptic effect on insect bites and small wounds, relieving pain. However, our note applies here as well: Even with treatment using apple cider vinegar, keep an eye on insect bites. If there is swelling, possibly due to an allergic reaction in your dog, you should still consult the vet. This also applies to small wounds that may become infected.
The Healthy Treat – Carrots
A secret tip for diarrhea is carrot soup. Dr. Ernst Moro, its creator, developed a recipe over a hundred years ago to reduce infant mortality due to diarrhea. Boil 1 pound of carrots with a liter of water for one to two hours. Puree the mixture and top it up with water to a liter again. Add a teaspoon of salt, let it cool, and it’s ready. Your pet can have a few spoonfuls several times a day. Again, the same rule applies: If diarrhea is not relieved, consult your vet.
Daisy as an Appetite Stimulant?
In the Middle Ages, daisies were used as a remedy for rheumatism and colds. For loss of appetite, simply mix one or two daisy heads into your pet’s food. Additionally, carrots, amper, and fennel also work for loss of appetite.
Always remember: Our home remedies are not a substitute for recognized veterinary medicine. While they can alleviate mild illnesses, if there is no improvement, a visit to the vet is essential. After all, it’s about the well-being of your beloved pet.
