Don’t Judge a Book by Its Cover: The Story of Richard Huff
You’ve probably heard the saying, “Don’t judge a book by its cover.” It’s a reminder that appearances can be deceiving. Sometimes, people forget this lesson, especially when it comes to judging parents based on how they look. This is the story of Richard Huff, a dad with a lot of tattoos and a big heart.
Richard is a 51-year-old man who has chosen tattoos as his way of expressing himself. With over 240 tattoos covering 85% of his body, he proudly calls himself an “ink addict.” Each tattoo tells a story, including names of his five children and even a tattoo of his daughter’s lips.
Richard loves his artwork and dreams of being 100% covered in tattoos within the next four years. “I don’t know if it’s the pain or the artwork that you put on you, but it just becomes fascinating when you’re able to do this,” he said, sharing his passion.
But not everyone sees Richard the way he sees himself. When people see his face tattoos, they often jump to conclusions. Some have even called him a bad father just because of how he looks.
Richard wants everyone to know that his family is “no different” from any other family out there. His wife, Marita, often shares videos and pictures of their family, but not all the comments are kind.
Richard’s children sometimes face teasing at school. His daughter once said, “They say, ‘Ah, it’s a bit scary!’ and I say, ‘No, my dad is not scary; he is good with tattoos!’” It’s tough for kids when their friends don’t understand their dad.
Marita, who has three children from previous relationships, also had her own worries about Richard at first. “I did judge Richard based on his looks at first,” she admitted. “But as I got to know him a little bit, he is actually a big-hearted person.”
Marita often talks about how Richard loves her and their family in a way that makes her feel special. She believes he is more than just a stepdad; he has truly stepped up for her kids.
Richard is very involved in his children’s lives. He participates in the PTA and attends all their events. “I want to be there for my kids,” he said, showing how much he cares. Despite his dedication, some people still criticize him. One comment read, “I’m not against tattoos, but I mean honestly, does he really need tattoos on his face like that?”
But there are also defenders of Richard. One person stood up for him, saying, “Everyone keeps talking about his face tattoo. He likes it. He got it. He’s a good father. Let him be.” This shows that while some people focus on his appearance, others see the loving father and husband he truly is.
Richard has thought a lot about the negative comments. He said, “If somebody can make negative comments like that, there’s something wrong with them themselves that they would have to judge somebody else.”
He believes that what matters most is the happiness of his family. “This is what we did and we’re happy. We’ve been together six years; our kids are happy, and to us, that’s all that matters.”
Even though Richard sometimes feels overwhelmed by the criticism, it doesn’t change how much he loves his family. “Having tattoos does not scare my children. It does not make me a bad father; it makes my kids get a different perspective on life,” he explained.
Richard wants everyone to see that love and support are what truly define a family, not the way someone looks on the outside.
