Bringing home your first babies should be the happiest time of your life, right? That’s what I thought. But when my twin daughters, Ella and Sophie, and I came home from the hospital, it turned into something I never expected—a nightmare that shook my world.
The Call That Changed Everything
After three tough days recovering in the hospital from a long, exhausting labor, I was finally ready to leave. I had dreamed of this moment for months—stepping outside with my tiny girls and seeing Derek, my husband, waiting with flowers, happy tears in his eyes, and ready to take us home as a family.
Instead, I got a phone call.
“Hey, baby,” Derek said, his voice tight and rushed. “I’m sorry, but I can’t pick you guys up like we planned.”
I frowned, holding Sophie close while Ella snoozed in her bassinet. “What? Derek, I just gave birth to twins. What’s more important than being here for us?”
“It’s my mom,” he said. “She’s having chest pains, and I need to take her to the hospital near her.”
His words hit me like a truck. “Chest pains? Why didn’t you tell me this earlier?” I asked, trying to stay calm, though my hands were trembling.
“It just happened,” he said, sighing. “I’ll come to you as soon as I can.”
Tears stung my eyes, but I forced my voice to stay steady. “Fine. I’ll take a taxi.”
“Thanks for understanding,” he said quickly before hanging up.
Understanding? I didn’t feel very understanding. I felt abandoned.
Coming Home Alone
When I got home, I expected to feel relief, to finally be in my own space with my girls. But instead, I froze on the spot.
My belongings—suitcases, diaper bags, even the mattress from the crib—were scattered across the front lawn like trash.
“What is this?” I whispered to myself, panic rising. I grabbed the cab driver’s help to carry the car seats to the lawn, my heart pounding in my chest. When I reached for the front door, my key wouldn’t work.
Confused and shaking, I saw it: a note taped to a suitcase. I unfolded it with trembling hands.
“Get out of here with your little moochers. I know everything. Derek.”
I stared at the words, my brain refusing to believe what I was seeing. Derek? My Derek? The man who held my hand at every appointment, who cried when he heard Ella and Sophie’s heartbeats for the first time? He wouldn’t do this.
I dialed his number, but my calls went straight to voicemail.
Turning to My Mom
Panicking, I called my mom. “Derek locked me out,” I sobbed into the phone. “He left a note… I don’t know what’s going on.”
“Stay there. I’m coming right now,” she said, her voice sharp with worry and anger.
When she arrived, she took one look at the mess and shook her head. “This doesn’t make sense,” she said, helping me pack everything into her car. “Derek loves you and those babies. Something’s not right here.”
That night at her house, I barely slept. My mind raced with questions. Why would Derek do this? Had someone lied to him?
Finding the Truth
The next morning, I left Ella and Sophie with my mom and drove back to the house, determined to get answers. What I saw made my jaw drop.
Through the window, I saw Derek’s mom, Lorraine, sitting in my living room, sipping tea like she owned the place.
I stormed to the door and banged on it. “Lorraine! Open up!”
When she opened the door, she smiled sweetly—too sweetly. “Oh, Jenna. Didn’t you get the note? You’re not welcome here anymore.”
“What is going on? Where is Derek?” I demanded, my voice shaking with anger.
“At the hospital, taking care of his sick mother,” she said, her voice oozing fake concern.
I stared at her. “You’re standing right here. You lied to him, didn’t you?”
She shrugged, her smirk growing. “And if I did? What are you going to do about it?”
“Why would you do this to us?” I asked, horrified.
“Because you had girls,” she said coldly. “This family needs a boy. You’re useless, and I won’t let you ruin Derek’s life with your burdens.”
I couldn’t believe my ears. Lorraine had faked her illness, locked me out, and taken Derek’s phone to keep us from talking—all because she didn’t approve of my daughters.
Derek Learns the Truth
Furious, I drove straight to the hospital. When I found Derek, I told him everything. At first, he just stared at me, stunned. Then his face darkened with anger.
“She did what?” he asked, his voice rising.
Without another word, he stormed out of the hospital, and I followed him home.
When we walked in, Lorraine was still lounging in the living room, but her smug look disappeared when she saw Derek.
“Mom,” he said, his voice shaking with fury. “What have you done?”
“I was protecting you!” she said defensively. “You deserve better than—”
“Enough!” Derek cut her off. “You lied to me, manipulated me, and threw my family out. Get out of my house. You’re not welcome in our lives anymore.”
Lorraine tried to argue, but Derek wouldn’t hear it. She left in a huff, slamming the door behind her.
A New Beginning
Derek turned to me, his eyes filled with tears. “I’m so sorry,” he said, his voice breaking. “I let her come between us. I’ll never let that happen again.”
For the first time in days, I felt hope. I knew it wouldn’t be easy, but with Derek by my side, I believed we could rebuild our family stronger than ever.
