Inheritance can cause a lot of problems fast. That’s what happened to Daphne when her father passed away, leaving her the house. She asked her stepmother to either start paying rent or move out. But when her stepmother refused, Daphne decided to evict her. What seemed like a straightforward situation turned into a confusing and emotional mess when an unexpected twist came out, leaving Daphne stunned and searching for advice.
Here’s Daphne’s story in her own words:
“My dad passed away, and he left me his small house. I told his wife that she could either pay rent using the $10,000 he left her or go live with her son. But instead of understanding, she refused and said, ‘How dare you?’ I couldn’t believe it, so I evicted her. A whole year went by, and I didn’t hear a word from her.
Then, out of nowhere, she called me yesterday, demanding that I come see her. I didn’t want to, but I went anyway. When I got there, I felt a chill go through me. She was living in a small apartment, and she told me that my dad bought it for her before he died. She said he used the rest of his savings to make sure she had a safe place to live if she ever got kicked out of the house.
But that wasn’t even the worst part. She said there was a deal—she signed papers saying that the apartment would go to me after she passed away, as long as she stayed in the house she and my dad shared. But since I forced her to leave, she can now give it to anyone she wants. And guess who she’s giving it to? Her son.
When the shock finally wore off, I was furious. I had only been trying to protect what was mine. She had money—she could’ve easily paid rent. The house isn’t a free hotel for her to stay in for nothing. And now, the apartment my dad paid for is going to her son, and not me? I didn’t even know about the apartment. I feel like I’ve been lied to and betrayed.
So now I’m stuck wondering, what should I do? Share your thoughts in the comments.”
