I Returned from My Business Trip to Find My Husband Hosting My Own Funeral in the Backyard

My Funeral Was Planned While I Was Still Alive

My marriage with Jake was perfect—until I returned home from a business trip and discovered our backyard had been transformed into a funeral venue. And the worst part? It was MY funeral. Jake stood in front, greeting guests dressed in black. What in the world was going on?

They say love can drive people to do crazy things, but hosting a funeral for your living wife? That’s a whole new level of madness.

Jake and I had been married for six wonderful years. We met through my college friend, Rachel, at a dinner party, and I’ll never forget how Jake had the whole room laughing with his terrible dad jokes.

After that night, I told Rachel, “He’s different from anyone I’ve ever met.”

Six months later, he proposed in our favorite coffee shop, and I knew in that moment I was making the best decision of my life by saying yes.

We started trying for a baby right after the wedding, full of hope and excitement. But life didn’t go as planned. Month after month, I got negative test results, and we couldn’t figure out what was wrong. After two years of trying, we visited fertility specialists, both of us holding on to hope that this time would be different. But, unfortunately, none of the treatments worked. It was heartbreaking.

And to make it worse, well-meaning relatives constantly bombarded me with questions.

“Have you tried those fertility herbs I told you about?” Aunt Susan would ask at every family gathering. “My neighbor’s daughter swears by them!”

The worst moment came last Thanksgiving when my cousin announced her pregnancy. I excused myself and ended up sobbing in the bathroom. Jake found me there, sitting on the toilet lid, tears streaking my face.

“Hey, beautiful,” he said, kneeling in front of me. “Want to ditch this place and grab some terrible diner food?”

I laughed through my tears. “Everyone will know why we’re leaving.”

“Let them know,” he shrugged. “Their opinions don’t pay our bills or make our happiness. We’re perfect just as we are.”

That’s Jake. He always knew how to lift me when the world felt too heavy.

While society made me feel incomplete for not having children, Jake made me feel whole. We didn’t need kids to define our happiness.

Now, let me tell you about the better part of my life, the part that kept me going—the work I loved. I had been climbing the corporate ladder for years. I was now a manager at a large firm, overseeing a team of 15 people. We had landed three major clients last quarter, and I couldn’t have been prouder of what we had achieved.

Jake, on the other hand, worked as an accountant at a smaller firm. He earned less than I did, but that never bothered us. He celebrated even the smallest victories, like when he fixed a reconciliation issue or helped a junior colleague understand a complex spreadsheet.

“Guess what?” he’d bounce into the kitchen after work, grinning. “Remember that reconciliation problem that was driving everyone crazy? I figured it out!”

I’d match his excitement every time. “That’s amazing! Tell me everything!”

Some of my friends didn’t get our dynamic. They thought it was strange that I earned more than Jake, that we didn’t have kids, and that we were perfectly happy with our simple life.

Jake and I had always been on the same page, until last month, the day my world turned upside down.

I was in my office, reviewing quarterly reports when my boss, David, called me in urgently.

“Lexi, we need you in Denver,” he said, looking at his computer. “The account’s hanging by a thread, and you’re the only one who can save it.”

“Denver? When?” I asked, already feeling the pressure.

“Tomorrow. Should be about a week,” he said.

I froze. The timing was terrible. It meant missing Jake’s birthday that weekend. We’d been planning a huge BBQ party for weeks. He had already bought a new grill, and I was so upset to miss it.

That evening, when I arrived home, I found Jake in the kitchen, humming while chopping vegetables.

“Something smells amazing,” I said, trying to delay the bad news.

“Just trying out a new marinade for the party,” he grinned. “Want to taste?”

“Jake, honey, I need to tell you something.”

His smile faded as he put the knife down. “What’s wrong?”

“I have to go to Denver tomorrow. For a week,” I said, my heart sinking.

His eyes widened. “But… the birthday BBQ?”

“I know. I’m so sorry. It’s a huge client, and David specifically asked for me. We can celebrate when I get back. Maybe even take that road trip we’ve been talking about?” I suggested, trying to lift his spirits.

He forced a smile. “Yeah, sure. We’ll do it when you get back.”

I watched as he picked up the knife again, his enthusiasm gone.

“I’ll make it up to you, I promise. It’s just a week,” I said. “We’ll be okay.”

“Work’s important,” he muttered. “I get it. Work’s always important.”

I hugged him from behind, breathing in his familiar scent. “I love you.”

“Love you too,” he whispered, but I could feel the hurt behind his words. “Just… come back soon, okay?”

The week in Denver was intense, but successful. Through marathon negotiations and late-night strategy sessions, we not only saved the account but expanded it. I wrapped up early and was excited to surprise Jake when I got home.

But as I turned onto our street, I knew something was off.

Cars lined both sides of the road, and people were walking toward our house. My stomach twisted with worry. What had happened?

I parked hurriedly and rushed toward the backyard, where I could hear murmured voices. When I saw it, I stopped dead in my tracks.

Rows of chairs were set up on our lawn, flower arrangements everywhere. At the front, there was a massive portrait of me, surrounded by black ribbons. It hit me like a punch to the gut. This wasn’t just a gathering. This was a funeral. MY funeral.

I walked into the backyard, and gasps echoed from the crowd. Some people even dropped their drinks.

Then I saw Jake, greeting everyone like I was dead.

“Jake!” I called, my voice shaking.

He spun around, his face turning bright red with anger.

“What are you doing here?” he demanded.

“What am I doing here?” I shouted, confused and hurt. “What is THIS? Why are you hosting my funeral?”

“Your mom told me the truth!” he shouted. “About your promotion. About Denver. About how you’re leaving me behind!”

I was stunned. “My mom told you?” I asked, barely believing it.

“I thought she already told you!” my mother called out, pushing through the crowd. “I came here as soon as your neighbor called me. I’ve been trying to talk sense into Jake for the past hour, but—”

“Thanks for ruining everything, Mom!” I snapped, cutting her off.

Turning back to Jake, I said, “And this? This is how you react? You throw me a funeral because you think I’m leaving you?”

“You were going to abandon everything we built!” Jake cried, his voice breaking. “You were going to leave me for Denver. I know you’ve always put work first, and this seemed like the perfect excuse to end things between us. We don’t even have kids—”

“No! You idiot!” I interrupted. “The company offered YOU a position too! I was waiting to tell you. I wanted us to make the decision together!”

Jake’s eyes widened in shock. “They… what?”

“They offered you a senior accountant position. A better pay, better benefits. I wanted us to move there together.” My voice cracked as tears streamed down my face. “But this? You hosting my funeral because you thought I’d abandon you? That’s not what partners do. That’s not what trust looks like!”

Jake reached for my hand, but I pulled away.

“I’m sorry,” he stammered. “I thought… I thought you’d leave me because I don’t earn as much. I just—”

“Enough, Jake,” I cut him off, my voice trembling. “I’m staying at my mom’s tonight. And we need to have a serious talk about boundaries.”

As I walked past the ridiculous portrait and the flowers, I realized this wasn’t just a funeral for the woman Jake thought was leaving him. It was a funeral for everything I thought our marriage stood for: love, trust, and partnership.

Later, I learned Jake had told everyone he was throwing a ‘special surprise party’ for me. Most of the guests were now in shock, realizing they’d been tricked into attending my ‘funeral.’

The next day, I called my boss and accepted the promotion. I also called a divorce lawyer. It was time to leave Jake.

Looking back, I’m grateful for the lessons fate taught me. All those years of failed attempts to have children turned out to be a blessing. At least there weren’t kids around to witness their father throwing a funeral for their living mother.

First of all, why she would go to her mother after her mother started the problem is beyond me. And, it was a funeral for him since he was given to believe his wife was leaving him. Her mother is the real problem. The two of them do need to talk and probably a little counseling, but it’s a bit over reaction to go for a divorce. They would be best served to move to Denver and as far away from her mother as possible.
