We’ve all been there: a special night out that takes a wrong turn because of an unexpected encounter. Amelia recently shared a story about her dining experience that brings up important issues about tipping, customer service, and how to deal with conflicts.
Subject: I Took Back My Tip Because of the Waitress’s Rude Behavior
Amelia writes: “Last night, my husband and I went out to a nice restaurant to celebrate his big promotion. Everything was going perfectly until the end, when our waitress completely ruined the evening with her bad attitude.
When the bill came, I left a $10 tip on an $85 bill. As the waitress picked up the money, she sneered and said, ‘Ten bucks? This isn’t the 1950s anymore!’ I was shocked by her sarcastic tone, and my husband was just as surprised.
I shot back, already upset, ‘Excuse me? I think $10 on an $85 bill is a fair tip.’ The waitress rolled her eyes and snapped back, ‘The standard tip these days is 20%. Do you not know how to calculate that?’ Her entitled and rude behavior made me furious.
I lost my cool and said, ‘With an attitude like that, you don’t deserve a tip at all!’ I quickly grabbed the $10 bill from the table. The waitress then started yelling at me, throwing insults and making a scene that caught the attention of other diners. My husband was embarrassed beyond words.
Finally, the manager stepped in and removed the angry waitress, who kept shouting at me as she was escorted away. We ended up leaving without leaving any tip at all.
Looking back, I might have overreacted, but her dismissive and disrespectful behavior was just too much. Now, I’m caught in a debate about whether I should have just let it go instead of making a scene. What do you think?”

The waitress chose to make the scene and she continued to make it worse.
That being said, if the waitress did her job efficiently without the attitude she ended your dining experience with, the tip should have been 20%
Since she resorted to berating g you and making a public scene, I think she got the tip she deserved.
I would no have her anything
You not only should have taken your 10.00 back, you should have dropped a penny in the bottom of a water glass. That is the biggest insult you can give a waitress, it’s worse than leaving nothing. I am an ex-waitress so I know.
