Title: A Shocking Discovery Before the Wedding
I’ve been with my fiancé, Adam, for six years, and we were all set to get married next month. Everything was perfect until a visit to my parents changed everything. We had planned this trip so Adam could meet more of my extended family before the big day. My parents were excited to host us, and we decided to stay in my old room for some nostalgia.
Adam, however, was a bit uneasy about it. “I don’t see why staying in your childhood home is going to change anything,” he said, looking a bit skeptical. I handed him a plate and smiled, trying to reassure him. “You’re supposed to feel welcome and at home with my family, too.”
As the night wound down and everyone went to bed, Adam started tossing and turning. “What’s going on?” I asked, turning to face him. “I just can’t sleep, Sasha,” he snapped. “It’s not my bed, and I’m not used to sleeping in beds that aren’t my own. And your bed is lumpy and uncomfortable.”
“Just go and take a walk outside,” I suggested, frustrated. “The fresh air should help, and you’ll come back and fall asleep.” “Fine,” he replied, getting out of bed and leaving the room.
Just as I was about to drift off, a terrifying scream pierced the silence. My heart raced as I bolted upright in bed. What was happening? Was someone in the house? While my mind raced, Adam stormed back into the room, his face twisted in horror and anger.
“What happened?” I blurted out, panic rising in my chest. “I cannot believe it,” he yelled, his voice trembling with rage. “Your mom! Sasha! Your mother! She’s kissing another man in the foyer!”
My heart sank. I had dreaded this moment. I always knew my parents had an unconventional marriage, and now it was spilling out into my life in the worst way possible. “No, no, no,” I thought. I had hoped we could get through this visit without drama.
“Call your dad, Sasha,” Adam demanded. “Tell him that your mom is cheating right here in your own home.” It seemed logical to him, but I knew it wouldn’t fix anything. Before I could explain, my mom walked in, still adjusting her clothes.
“I can explain,” she began, but Adam cut her off, his voice rising. “Explain? What’s there to explain? You’re cheating on your husband in his own home!”
“It’s not cheating, darling,” she replied softly, trying to stay calm. “Sasha knows, and she’ll explain it all to you. Shaun and my marriage is different. Very different. It’s unconventional compared to your usual marriage. You need to understand that, Adam, before you judge us.”
Adam’s eyes widened as he turned to me. “You knew? You knew about this, and you didn’t tell me?”
“I didn’t know how to tell you!” I cried, desperate to reach him. “I’m not proud of keeping this secret, but it wasn’t mine to tell!”
“Should have told me!” he yelled, throwing his hands in the air. “This isn’t something you just keep hidden from the person you’re going to marry. I don’t know if I can trust you now. Was this a setup? Did you want to introduce me to this lifestyle?”
I felt overwhelmed, confusion clouding my thoughts. Memories from my teenage years flooded back. I remembered when my friends planned a sleepover at my house. “You have the biggest room, Sasha,” my friend Brielle said, excitement lighting up her face. “Let’s have it at your place!”
“That’s perfectly fine with me,” I replied, thrilled. I told my mom about our plans, and she smiled, saying, “Sure, honey. You girls can take care of yourselves. Dad and I have a dinner that evening.” Little did I know what awaited me that night.
My friends and I were on the couch when my parents came home with another couple. My mother held tightly to a man’s hand, and my father kissed the other woman. They looked shocked when they saw me.
“We are married to each other, and we love each other. We’re committed, honey. But we’re also allowed to see other people if we want to,” my mother explained gently. “There’s nothing wrong with the way we are. You need to understand that.”
Listening to Adam, I felt a wave of emotions wash over me. “No, it’s nothing like that,” I said, trying to convince him. “I am dedicated to you. I don’t want that lifestyle.” But Adam wouldn’t listen. He started talking about his mother’s infidelity that had torn his family apart. “Everything is a red flag for me, Sasha,” he said, his voice heavy with pain.
He packed a bag and stormed out to a hotel, saying he needed time to think about our engagement. I was left crying, feeling crushed by the weight of my parents’ choices and how they affected my relationship.
“You need to talk to him,” my mom said, handing me a cup of coffee. “Just go to him.”
So, I did. When I reached the hotel, the air was thick with unspoken words. We barely spoke. I suggested we move to my grandmother’s house for the rest of our stay so we could talk things over comfortably. “Yeah,” Adam replied, looking worn out. “That’s okay with me because this hotel is too cold anyway.”
There was an icy tension between us that hadn’t been there before. “I’ve never kept secrets from you,” I told him softly. “I didn’t know how to bring it up. It’s not something I like talking about because I struggled to understand it myself.”
Adam sighed, rubbing his temples. “I get it. But this feels too close to home, Sasha. I just need some time.”
The rest of the week at my grandmother’s was strained, but we tried to make the best of it. My parents apologized to Adam, but it didn’t change anything. Their actions had triggered something deep within him.
On the drive home, Adam and I finally reached a decision. We wanted to stay together and see where life took us, but I said, “I think we need to go to therapy.”
“I think that’s a good idea,” he replied, biting his lip. “Because I need to uncover my own trauma before accepting your parents.”
Now, Adam and I have started talking about everything. From his fears to my shame and our future together, we realized that only through open communication could we begin to heal.
