Fans everywhere couldn’t help but wish they were the stunning Debra Winger after they watched the iconic scene in An Officer and a Gentleman. In this classic romance, Richard Gere played the dashing Zack Mayo, a Naval Officer who swept factory worker Paula, played by Debra, into his arms and carried her away from her workplace. This moment became a symbol of romance, and for many, it set the standard for love stories.

The movie became legendary, and with it, Debra Winger’s popularity soared. Many were envious of her, especially since she starred alongside some of Hollywood’s most attractive men. Richard Gere’s heroic portrayal of Zack Mayo made fans swoon, and Debra’s own radiant beauty left an unforgettable mark on the screen.

Debra Winger’s Timeless Beauty

Even today, at 69 years old, Debra Winger remains a stunning woman. Over the years, she has shared photos of herself on Instagram, first with her signature brown hair and later with graceful, wavy gray hair that only added to her charm. She’s proven that beauty isn’t just about youth—it’s about embracing who you are at every stage of life.

Her Early Career

Debra’s first big break came in the 1970s. In 1979, she played Drusilla, the younger sister of Lynda Carter’s Diana Prince/Wonder Woman, in the popular TV series Wonder Woman. But Debra’s breakout role came in 1976 in Sleep Party ’57. She was offered more roles, but Debra wasn’t interested in being typecast. She didn’t want to be known just for playing similar characters.

“I didn’t want to be stuck in one box,” Debra shared in a later interview. It was a decision that set her apart, and her career soon took off in a big way.

The early 1980s saw Debra Winger at the height of her career, with three classic films that earned her multiple Academy and Golden Globe nominations. In 1980, she starred alongside John Travolta in Urban Cowboy, where Travolta was the heartthrob, famous for his slick moves in Saturday Night Fever (1977) and Grease (1978).

Then, in 1982, she became Paula in An Officer and a Gentleman, and her portrayal of the factory worker fell in love with the charming, navy officer made her a household name.

But it was her role in Terms of Endearment (1983) that truly defined her career. She played Emma, a young woman with a terminal illness who deals with her overbearing mother, played by the legendary Shirley MacLaine. The film was a massive hit, and Debra’s raw, emotional performance earned her widespread recognition.

The Break from Hollywood

After achieving so much success, Debra decided to take a step back from acting. Many people wondered why, and rumors swirled about her reasons for leaving. The most common rumor was that Debra couldn’t get along with her co-stars.

One of her co-stars, Louis Gossett Jr., who played Sgt. Emil Foley in An Officer and a Gentleman, shared some insight into their relationship. In his book, An Actor and a Gentleman, Gossett wrote, “The onscreen chemistry between the two of them was terrific, but it was a different story once the camera was turned off. They couldn’t have been more far from one another.”

Debra, according to Gossett, didn’t think highly of Richard Gere’s acting, even calling him “a brick wall.” She also had harsh words for the film’s director, Taylor Hackford, calling him “an animal.” Clearly, there were some tensions behind the scenes.

But it wasn’t just her conflicts with co-stars that caused her to step away from Hollywood. Debra also had a clash with Shirley MacLaine on the set of Terms of Endearment.

The two women had very different personalities, which made working together challenging. Shirley MacLaine recalled their first meeting in a 1983 interview with People. “I was wearing all my leftover movie-star fur coats to see how my character would feel. Debra was wearing a miniskirt and combat boots. Oh my goodness,” she laughed.

The two were reportedly in competition for the “top billing” on the film, and when they both received nominations for Best Actress at the Oscars, things got even more intense. In her acceptance speech, MacLaine famously said, “I deserve this!” as she carried the prize home. Despite their rivalry, Debra said the break was personal rather than professional.

“I wasn’t interested in the upcoming parts,” Debra explained. “I had already felt that I had done it. I needed something more challenging.”

A New Chapter

Debra’s hiatus lasted for about six years. During this time, she moved to New York City and focused on her personal life. She married actor Arliss Howard in 1996 and became a stepmother to his son, Sam. Together, they had a son named Gideon Babe in 1997. Debra also had a son, Noah Hutton, from her first marriage to actor Timothy Hutton (1986-1990).

Her return to acting came with the 2001 film Big Bad Love, which Arliss Howard directed and produced. In 2002, Debra starred in the documentary Searching for Debra Winger, which explored the reasons behind her sudden withdrawal from Hollywood.

A Successful Comeback

Debra’s return to film in the 2000s was met with excitement. She appeared in Rachel Getting Married (2008) alongside Anne Hathaway and in The Lovers (2017), a romantic comedy. She also starred in Kajillionaire (2020), a crime-comedy that was met with critical acclaim. In 2021, Debra appeared in With/In, an anthology film, where she played a prominent role in the segment titled “Her Own,” written and directed by her husband.

“Now that I’m living under the freaking sign, I just chuckle while staring at it,” Debra once said about Hollywood. “Los Angeles is a place, but the idea of Hollywood doesn’t really exist for me.”
