Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter is nearing an incredible milestone—his 100th birthday on October 1. Recently, his grandson, Jason Carter, gave a heartwarming update on his grandfather’s health during a special music event held in Jimmy’s honor.
The event, “Jimmy Carter 100: A Celebration in Song,” celebrated his remarkable life and his love for music, while also giving fans insight into how Jimmy is doing after months in hospice care at his home in Plains, Georgia.
Speaking to People magazine at the event, Jason shared the latest about his grandfather’s condition. “He has really physically diminished,” Jason admitted, “but he is emotionally engaged and still having experiences and laughing, loving.” Even though Jimmy Carter’s body is weaker, his heart and mind are still present, finding joy in the world around him. It was clear from Jason’s words that Jimmy’s spirit remains strong, despite his frailty.
Back in February 2023, Jimmy Carter, the 39th President of the United States, entered hospice care, and at that time, his family believed the end was near. “We thought it was the end,” Jason said, reflecting on those difficult early days. But to everyone’s surprise, Jimmy outlasted those expectations. “God had other plans,” Jason added, marveling at how his grandfather has defied the odds.
In an earlier interview with Southern Living, Jason had spoken about the unpredictability of his grandfather’s health, explaining that the family never knows what to expect. “He’s not awake every day,” Jason said, “and when we visit, we don’t always know how he’ll be.” There are good days and harder days, but through it all, Jimmy’s family remains by his side. Jason also shared a moment when he asked his grandfather about this uncertainty.
Jimmy, with a smile on his face, replied, “I don’t know myself.”
For Jimmy, home has always been in Plains, Georgia, where he spent his final years with his late wife, Rosalynn Carter. Rosalynn passed away in November 2023 at the age of 96, after being married to Jimmy for an incredible 77 years. Her death left a profound impact on Jimmy, and Jason reflected on the depth of his grandfather’s loss. “None of us really understand what it’s like for him right now,” Jason said quietly.
“There are things about the spirit that you just can’t understand.” After spending nearly eight decades together, Jimmy has had to adjust to life without the person he built his life with.
Even though Jimmy has been in hospice care for over 19 months, Plains remains the place where he finds peace. “It is the place that has given him the greatest support,” Jason explained. “It is a fundamental part of who he has been for his whole life. There is no other place in the world that he would be at peace other than Plains.”
While the long time in hospice has come with its challenges, Jimmy has been able to experience an outpouring of love from his family and community. Jason made it clear that despite the difficult journey, Jimmy still feels love and joy in his life. “He gets frustrated sometimes,” Jason admitted, “but there’s also appreciation for all the love surrounding him.”
The update on Jimmy Carter’s health came just before the big birthday celebration, held on September 17 at Atlanta’s Fox Theatre. The concert was a star-studded event, featuring musicians like Chuck Leavell, D-Nice, and Eric Church. Fans and friends alike came together to honor the former president, and the event was open to the public as a tribute to Jimmy’s lifelong love for music.
Jason shared how much music has always meant to his grandfather, whether during his years in the White House or at home in Plains. Music has been a constant source of joy and inspiration for Jimmy, and this concert was a perfect way to celebrate his extraordinary life.
Though his body may be frail, Jimmy Carter’s legacy and his love for life remain stronger than ever. He continues to inspire not only his family but also the nation, showing the world the power of resilience, love, and kindness.
