Keanu Reeves, one of the most beloved stars of his generation, has a reputation that’s hard to beat. Anyone who’s met him has nothing but kind words to say. That’s why fans were concerned when the actor revealed that something bad had happened to him.

At 59 years old, Keanu shared a story about how he broke his kneecap while working on set. Known for his action-packed roles in movies like The Matrix and John Wick, it was surprising to hear that something so simple had caused him such pain.

It all started when Stephen Colbert asked him, “What happened? How did they get to you?”

In his usual calm, tough-guy tone, Keanu replied, “No one got to me,” then added with a smile, “Accident got to me.”

Colbert, curious for more details, pushed further. “Did you jump from one building to another? Were you rolling over sharp objects like razor blades? What were you doing?”

Keanu shook his head, clearly amused. “No, Stephen, I was just walking into a room—the dressing room, actually. Let me tell you.”

He explained that it happened while he was filming a scene with Aziz Ansari and Seth Rogen for their upcoming comedy Good Fortune. The three of them had just finished spending time in a freezing cold plunge pool, and Keanu, trying to warm up, started doing what he called the “cold shuffle” in a room with padded carpeting. Unfortunately, in the middle of his playful movements, his foot caught on something.

Keanu stood up in front of Stephen’s desk to show him exactly how it went down, pretending to stumble a bit. “I spiked, man. Like, I spiked,” he said, mimicking the way he hit the ground. “Just slammed it right into the floor.”

He paused, shaking his head as if he still couldn’t believe it. “My kneecap—my patella—shattered like a broken potato chip. But at first, I didn’t even realize it. I just knew something was off when my knee popped.”

Then, with his signature laid-back humor, Keanu quipped, “Comedy is tough, man.”

Stephen, always quick with a joke, said, “But Aziz and Rogen weren’t making an action movie.”

Keanu chuckled. “Nope. It was comedy.”

“Welcome to my life,” Stephen replied, laughing along.

Back in January, Keanu was even spotted on set with an ice pack on his knee and walking around on crutches, clearly recovering from the accident.

Good Fortune, the movie they were filming, is special because it’s also Aziz Ansari’s debut as a director. Alongside Keanu, the film stars Sandra Oh and Keke Palmer, with Aziz not only directing but also co-writing and co-producing.

Keanu’s injury may have been unexpected, but it seems like he took it all in stride, reminding everyone that even comedy can have its tough moments.
