Amelia was over the moon. She couldn’t wait to meet her newborn grandson, Hans. Her heart swelled with joy at the thought of holding him for the first time. But when her son, Mark, called to say he couldn’t pick her up, her excitement turned to disappointment.
“I can’t pick you up, Mom. I have to run some errands for Camilla, and other people are coming. We’ll set a time for you to see the baby,” Mark said over the phone. Amelia’s heart sank. She had been looking forward to this day for weeks.
“Are you sure? It’s pretty quick by car,” Amelia pleaded, her voice trembling with hope.
“Some other time, Mom. I have to go. See you later!” Mark replied abruptly before hanging up.
Amelia sat down on her couch, feeling a heavy weight in her chest. She couldn’t shake the feeling that Mark had been distant lately. Ever since he married Camilla, a woman from a wealthy Connecticut family, things had changed. Camilla’s parents had gifted them a grand house, and Mark seemed to be living a life far removed from the humble upbringing Amelia had given him as a single mother.
“You’re being silly,” Amelia told herself, trying to push away her worries. “Mark is just busy. They have a baby now and a million things to do. He’ll pick you up some other time.”
But the longing to see her grandson was too strong to ignore. Amelia had an idea. She would walk to Mark’s house. It would be a challenge—she used a walker and the journey would take hours—but she was determined. The bus routes didn’t go near his home, and she couldn’t afford a taxi. Walking was her only option.
With her walker in hand and a bag of gifts for the baby securely attached, Amelia set off. The journey was grueling. She had to stop frequently to catch her breath, and her legs ached with every step. Hours passed—two, three, four—but she pressed on, driven by love and determination.
Finally, she reached Mark’s grand house. Her heart raced with excitement as she rang the doorbell, clutching the special bag she had brought. But when Mark opened the door, his face fell.
“Mom?” he said, his voice filled with shock. “What are you doing here?”
Amelia smiled, trying to hide her exhaustion. “Surprise!” she said, though her voice wavered. “I wanted to see Hans.”
Mark stepped outside, closing the door behind him. He looked uneasy, almost angry. “Mom, I told you we’d set a time for you to see the baby. You can’t just show up like this!”
Amelia’s smile faded. “Mark, I walked for hours to get here. I just want to meet my grandson. I brought—”
“I don’t care what you brought!” Mark snapped, cutting her off. “I don’t want you here right now. You need to leave immediately!”
Amelia’s heart shattered. Tears welled up in her eyes as Mark turned and went back inside, slamming the door in her face. She stood there, stunned and hurt. He hadn’t even asked if she was okay after her long, exhausting walk.
Feeling defeated, Amelia decided to leave the bag of gifts by the door. She turned her walker around and began the long journey home. Her legs were on fire, and her spirit was crushed. But luck was on her side. Her kind neighbor, Mrs. Cassavetes, spotted her and offered her a ride home.
When Amelia finally got home, she collapsed on the couch. Her legs were swollen and throbbing with pain. She managed to ice them and take some pain relievers, but the emotional pain was harder to soothe. She fell asleep on the couch, too exhausted to make it to her bedroom.
Meanwhile, at Mark’s house, the day’s chaos had finally settled. Guests had come and gone, and the house was quiet. As Mark waved off the last visitor, he noticed the bag Amelia had left by the door. He picked it up and saw the tag: “From Grandma.”
Curious, he opened the bag and found his old childhood toys inside. Memories flooded back—playing with these toys, laughing with his mom, and feeling loved despite their modest life. Guilt washed over him like a tidal wave.
“What’s wrong, honey?” Camilla asked, noticing his tears.
“I did something horrible to my mother,” Mark confessed, his voice breaking. He told her everything—how he had turned his back on his roots, how he had been ashamed of his humble beginnings, and how he had treated Amelia that day. “I can’t believe I was so cruel to her,” he sobbed.
Camilla comforted him, but Mark knew he had to make things right. He grabbed his keys and drove to Amelia’s house. When he arrived, he used his spare key to let himself in, not wanting to wake her if she was asleep. But what he saw broke his heart.
Amelia was lying on the couch, her legs swollen and covered with cold compresses. She looked so fragile, so exhausted. Mark gently woke her.
“Mom,” he whispered, his voice filled with regret.
“Mark, why are you here?” Amelia asked groggily, trying to sit up.
“Don’t move,” Mark said softly. He carefully picked her up and carried her to her bedroom. He tended to her swollen legs, adding more ice and making sure she was comfortable. Then he made her a meal, and they sat together, sipping tea.
“I’m so sorry, Mom,” Mark said, tears streaming down his face. “I was ashamed of where I came from, and I took it out on you. I was wrong. You’ve always been there for me, and I treated you horribly.”
Amelia smiled through her own tears. “I had a feeling you were ashamed, but I’m glad you came here to apologize. That’s what I taught you—when you make a mistake, you make it right.”
Mark stayed with her all night, making sure she was okay. By morning, Amelia’s legs felt better, and Mark insisted they go back to his house so she could finally meet Hans.
When they arrived, Camilla greeted them warmly. She apologized too, admitting she should have noticed Amelia’s absence and asked Mark about it. The three of them spent a wonderful day together, with Amelia sharing her wisdom about raising babies.
In the end, Mark asked Amelia to move in with them. “We have plenty of space, and I don’t want you to be alone so far away,” he said. Amelia agreed, and the family was reunited, stronger than ever.
