Simon Marks, a 37-year-old man, had been living in his house for years, never suspecting there was anything unusual about it. But one day, he stumbled upon something truly strange that changed everything.
It started when Simon was parking his car. As he pulled into the driveway, the wheels got stuck. Then, he heard a strange cracking sound from underneath.
Sighing in frustration, Simon muttered to himself, “Well, this day couldn’t get any worse.”
He stepped out of the car to check. Looking closely, he saw that the stones in his driveway had cracked open, and the ground underneath seemed to be sinking. As Simon brushed aside the dirt, he spotted something unexpected— a metal object, just beneath the surface.
Curious and unsure of what he was dealing with, Simon grabbed the metal, trying to pull it free. It didn’t budge. “What on earth is this?” he wondered aloud. He walked around the area, hoping to get a better sense of what was hidden beneath his driveway.
Not knowing what to do next, Simon called his father. When his father arrived, the two began digging together, removing layers of tightly packed dirt. After a lot of hard work, they uncovered an opening.
With excitement and a bit of nerves, Simon and his father climbed down an old, rusted ladder. “Where could this possibly lead?” Simon thought as they descended.
Once at the bottom, Simon’s father took one look around and said, “This is an air raid shelter.” Simon was amazed and immediately looked it up online. He later recalled, “After searching on Google, we found out that there are a lot of these shelters in the area.”
The shelter they had found in Simon’s garden was built during World War II. These shelters were constructed to protect civilians from bombings, and they were once common in many homes across the country.
“The previous owner of the house must have known it was there,” Simon speculated, “and he probably filled it in when he built the garden.”
Simon and his father continued exploring the shelter. It was old and partially sealed off. One of the walls was bricked up, and Simon wondered if there could be more chambers beyond it. “I’m ninety percent sure we won’t find any more rooms,” he said. “They probably bricked it up when they built the house’s foundation. If that’s the case, we’ll just have to leave it as it is.”
Despite not being able to explore further, Simon’s discovery was still remarkable. He filmed the entire process, and before long, his story spread all over the internet.
Simon and his father see the shelter as an important historical artifact. They’re planning to restore it, preserving this piece of history. “Even though it’s in the past, we shouldn’t forget about that time,” Simon explained. “It helps us remember what people went through back then.”
In uncovering the shelter, Simon hadn’t just stumbled upon an old structure—he had found a hidden connection to a time when the world was very different, and people relied on these shelters for survival. For Simon, this discovery became a way to honor that history, and he knew it was a piece of the past worth saving.
