We all grow old, and eventually, we all have to say goodbye. It’s something that’s a part of life.
Personally, I’m not too afraid of dying. To me, it’s a natural, beautiful thing. But what really frightens me is the thought of getting old and losing the ability to care for myself.
The idea of depending on someone else for everything—being unable to go to the bathroom on your own or forgetting the names of your own children—that’s terrifying. It’s not really living anymore.
Maria was living her final days at a care home, fully aware that her time was running out.
She had spent her life teaching music—piano and voice—and she missed being surrounded by the sounds of music. It was who she was.
But Maria was lucky. One of her former students worked at the same care facility in Austinburg, Ohio.
Joshua Woodard had been one of her students when he was just a little boy of nine, so they shared a long history.
Maria’s greatest wish was simple. She wanted to hear her favorite song, “How Great Thou Art,” one last time before she passed.
Joshua knew how much it meant to her. He couldn’t wait to grant her that wish.
With the lyrics to the song on his phone, Joshua sang a heartfelt version, his voice trembling with emotion as he sang Maria’s favorite hymn.
The moment was made even more special by the connection between them. Joshua had been one of her students all those years ago.
“Hospice workers are angels, but this one is extra special,” said Marti Adkins Redmond, a fellow hospice worker.
“Mary taught voice and piano, and this aide, Joshua Woodard, was one of her students as a child. These are special people doing special work!”
Maria’s sister-in-law was there too, capturing the powerful moment on video.
Sadly, Maria is no longer with us, which makes this clip even more moving. But it’s a memory that will live on in the hearts of everyone who saw it.
This video is a tribute not just to Maria, but to the staff who care for our elderly loved ones with so much compassion and love.
So please, share this beautiful clip with your friends on Facebook and take a moment to honor the incredible people working in hospice care. They truly make a difference.
