When a child goes missing, it’s like the whole world stops. Everyone in the community comes together, desperately hoping to find the child and bring them home safe. People pray for a happy ending, where the child is reunited with their family, or at least, some kind of positive outcome. But sometimes, the hope fades, and the story turns into one of the many unsolved mysteries that haunt people for years, like Madeleine McCann’s case.
Even decades later, her family still holds on, hoping for a miracle, never knowing what really happened to her.
Sadly, not every story gets that miracle. Some end in the worst way possible—the child is found, but it’s too late. This is one of those heartbreaking stories, the story of Kennedy Jean Schroer.
It’s always tough hearing about missing children, but Kennedy’s case took a devastating turn. Police found her remains buried in the backyard of her adoptive parents’ home, and the worst part? They believe she’s been dead for four long years.
Kennedy and her two sisters were adopted in 2019 after their biological mother lost custody. Their birth mom, Christa Helm, had hoped her daughters would have a better life with their new family in Kansas. She wanted to believe things were going to be okay for her girls. But that dream was shattered on September 11, 2024, when police made the tragic discovery—Kennedy’s tiny body was found buried in the garden.
DNA tests confirmed the remains were Kennedy’s, and investigators believe she died in November 2020, when she was only six years old. But because so much time had passed, her body had decomposed, and no one could figure out how she died. The police are digging deeper into the case, but so far, no arrests have been made.
“While we understand the desire to hold people accountable, we need to get this right, not just fast,” the police said. They don’t want to rush it—they need to make sure they uncover the truth.
Kennedy’s biological mom, Christa, is beyond heartbroken. To her, Kennedy was Natalie Garcia before her adoptive parents changed her name. Now, Christa is fighting to bring her two other daughters back home. They’re still living with the same adoptive family, but Christa believes they need to be with their real family.
“I want them to get the therapy and love they need from their real family, where they belong,” Christa said in an interview with KSN.
People are frustrated that no one has been arrested yet. The police understand the anger and confusion. In a press release, they said, “We understand that many in the public may be confused how an arrest in this case has not been made, that is completely understandable. What we would like to convey is that we have one chance to gather as much information as possible, to find out what happened to this child and to tell her story.”
The Rose Hill Police Department is doing everything they can. “Officers, detectives, surrounding law enforcement agencies, social workers, mental health professionals, and many others” are all working together, determined to find the answers that Kennedy deserves.
They ended with a promise: “What we can assure anyone interested in this case, Kennedy is the center of our Universe and will remain so until we have answers.”
It’s a story that leaves you shattered, a life cut far too short. But people are still hoping that, even though Kennedy is gone, justice will finally be served.
