Parenting a teenager who’s full of attitude and disrespect is no easy task, and moms and dads often try different ways to discipline their kids. One mom named Heidi Johnson came up with a bold approach and shared it on Facebook, not expecting what would happen next. She only meant for her close friends to see the post, but it ended up going viral. Even though she didn’t plan it that way, she’s not sorry it happened.
Heidi had written a handwritten letter to her 13-year-old son, Aaron, calling him out for acting like she was just his “roommate” instead of his mom. In the letter, she even gave him a detailed bill adding up to over $700 for things like food, rent, and other expenses. Since Aaron was treating her like a roommate, she decided to treat him the same way.
At the end of the letter, Heidi signed off with, “Love, Mom.” And make no mistake—she really does love her son. After the post blew up, she wrote another post explaining the whole situation. Some parents had been quick to criticize her, but she set the record straight: “I am not going to put my 13-year-old on the street if he can’t pay his half of the rent,” she assured them.
“I don’t want him to make any payment. I want him to appreciate the blessings and gifts we have, and to take pride in his home and surroundings.”
Heidi didn’t expect her son to actually pay up. Instead, her goal was for Aaron to realize “what things cost” and understand what life would look like if she wasn’t his parent but just a “roommate.” This was never about money—it was about teaching him respect and appreciation.
She also shared more about what led to the letter. Aaron had lied to her about finishing his homework, and when she confronted him, he shrugged and said, “Well, I’m making money now.” He was referring to the small income he was getting from his YouTube channel, which definitely wasn’t enough to cover his rent, let alone food or utilities. His attitude had pushed her to teach him this tough but important lesson.
Despite the public attention, Heidi’s relationship with her son stayed strong. “He and I still talk as openly as ever,” she said. Aaron had apologized several times since the letter, realizing the message his mom was trying to send.
After the post went viral, Heidi found herself becoming a source of advice for other parents. “People feel comfortable coming to me and asking for advice, venting, or even just having someone bear witness to their experience by listening,” she said. “It seems like my post has opened a door.”
Through her bold approach, Heidi not only helped her son understand responsibility but also became a voice for other parents looking for guidance.
