In 2005, a remarkable woman named Adriana Iliescu became the center of attention around the globe when she gave birth to her daughter, Eliza. What made this event extraordinary? Adriana was 66 years old, making her the oldest mother in the world at that time! The moment she held Eliza in her arms, her happiness was boundless.
Now, fast forward 17 years later, and Adriana is back in the spotlight as new photos of Eliza begin to make waves on social media. People everywhere can’t help but notice how much she has grown and how clearly she radiates joy.

Adriana, who made headlines everywhere as the oldest mother, found herself in the Guinness Book of World Records after Eliza’s birth. People were shocked, amazed, and even a little judgmental because they couldn’t understand how Adriana could become a mother at such an advanced age.
In 2010, Adriana bravely opened up about her experience as a mother. Despite facing heavy criticism, she stood strong and shared her perspective. “The mirror is unkind to women,” she explained in an interview with the Daily Mail. “But if we are talking about my energy, then I feel like a young woman.
I feel like I’m 27, and when I feel a bit more tired, I feel like I’m 37. I am healthier than women more than half my age.” Adriana didn’t let anyone’s negativity shake her confidence. “People think they are being funny when they call me granny, but I didn’t have Eliza to make me look younger. I never feel my years.”
During this same interview, a 71-year-old Adriana shared something surprising: she was considering having another child! “Medically, it’s possible,” she said. “I understand there are trials going on with a 70-year-old woman in England, so it could be done.
I am fine and healthy, and I think it would be possible to have another child in the future, but I’m not in a rush at the moment.”
Her love for Eliza blossomed over the years, creating a strong bond between them. Eliza, a lively and fun-loving teen, brings a vibrancy to Adriana’s life that many might envy. Despite people whispering about Adriana’s age as a mother, she firmly believes she is doing an excellent job.
“I don’t smoke and I don’t drink. If I live as long as my parents did, Eliza will be 20 by the time I pass away. I think I still have a lot to give her,” Adriana proudly declared.
Becoming a mother later in life wasn’t so much a choice for Adriana; it was a journey shaped by circumstances. When she was in her 20s and freshly married, she faced a heartbreaking decision to abort a pregnancy for medical reasons. Tragically, her husband left her when she was just 24, and she shifted her focus to her work at a university in Romania.
“I couldn’t even think about a child, as I was working,” she reflected on those years. But everything changed when she was 37. After completing her doctorate, Adriana was ready to become a mother. Unfortunately, there was no IVF available at that time.
Years passed, and when IVF finally became an option in Romania, Adriana took action. She went through her first treatment in 2000, but sadly, that pregnancy ended in sorrow.
Many people who knew her turned their backs and criticized her ambitions, believing that what she wanted was wrong. But Adriana never lost her hope. Her determination to become a mother remained unshakeable.
Eventually, she found Dr. Bogdan Marinescu in Bucharest, who supported her dream of motherhood with IVF. This time, her efforts led to a pregnancy with triplets.
Tragically, two of the babies didn’t survive, leaving her with only Eliza. Adriana’s joy was bittersweet as Eliza was born prematurely. For a while, she had to stay in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) to grow stronger.
But Adriana never lost faith. She lovingly watched Eliza grow from a fragile newborn into a strong, vibrant little girl. Deeply religious, Adriana wanted to have her daughter baptized. However, some religious organizations were unkind about her being a mother at her age.
During the baptism, some nuns glared at her, and one even referred to Eliza as “the product of dark forces.” But Adriana lovingly brushed off their negativity, declaring that Eliza was a gift from God.
Fast forward to 2022, and it has now been 17 incredible years since Adriana became a mother for the first time. The two of them are living life to the fullest together, forming lots of beautiful memories, even if people still sometimes think Adriana is Eliza’s grandmother! Yet Adriana feels youthful both in body and spirit; she has so much love left to give.
Now at age 83, Adriana hasn’t slowed down. She continues to write and has produced over 25 children’s books. In addition, she teaches part-time at her university in Bucharest. Her appearance might give people the impression of the sweet grandmother figure, yet inside, she is filled with strength and passion for life.
Adriana also made sure Eliza’s future is secure. When she first pursued IVF, she struck a deal with her doctor. If anything were to happen to her, he agreed to be Eliza’s godfather and legal guardian. So even though Adriana wishes to keep her family life private, we know that 17-year-old Eliza has dreams of continuing her studies and attending college.
