In Cornwall, England, the locals are used to dealing with bad roads. But recently, one person decided they’d had enough and took it upon themselves to fill a huge pothole on Tanhouse Road and Bodmin Hill in Lostwithiel with cement.
This do-it-yourself fix brought some temporary relief, but it also caused a stir among the anonymous motorist, Cornwall Council, and the road repair company Cormac.
The road had been officially closed at the start of April because of drainage issues. After a month of no action from the government, a frustrated driver decided to fix the problem themselves during the first weekend of May. The road was open again for a short time, but then Cormac closed it down, insisting that only their team should handle the repairs.
Now, Cornwall Highways is on the hunt to find the person responsible for this rogue repair. They’re asking the community to share any information about the mystery motorist. Meanwhile, Colin Martin, the Cornwall councilor for Lanreath and Lostwithiel, sees the pothole as a symbol of the wider problems in public services due to lack of investment.
Mr. Martin says the road will stay closed until Cormac can complete the repairs. However, this could take weeks since the repair teams are busy fixing smaller potholes on other roads. He also points out that budget cuts by the Conservatives running Cornwall Council in recent years have led to an increase in potholes across the county.
This story of a citizen taking matters into their own hands is reminiscent of a similar incident in 2017. Back then, a resident in Toronto built a set of park stairs for a community garden at a fraction of the cost estimated by the city.
However, the city’s reaction to this independent effort was not very positive. Find out more about their response in the next section.
