My Brother Kept Insulting My Husband for Being ‘Just an Electrician’ – But Karma Had the Last Laugh
My brother and I couldn’t be more different, but one thing we do share is determination. We grew up in a family of professionals, where success was the norm. I chose a different path than my brother. I fell in love with Mark, an electrician who runs a very successful business, but my brother just couldn’t see past the title of “electrician.”
After years of listening to his hurtful comments, I was ready to stand up for my husband. But before I could say anything, karma decided to step in.
I had a comfortable childhood. My parents worked hard to give us everything we needed while teaching us the importance of hard work. My mom is a brain surgeon, and my dad runs his own company.
My older brother, Jack, became a lawyer, but he’s more interested in showing off his wealth than working hard to build a successful practice. He loves to flaunt his fancy cars, designer clothes, and his endless bragging. Now he’s even engaged to his third fiancée, treating her like another trophy to show off.
I, on the other hand, have always preferred a simpler life. My husband, Mark, and I live comfortably, but we like to keep things modest. What Jack doesn’t know is that Mark didn’t just become an electrician; he went to business school and built a company that makes four times what I earn! Even with all his success, Mark remains humble.
He invests much of his earnings back into his business and supports charities. My parents love this about him, especially when we surprised them with an all-expenses-paid cruise for their 30th wedding anniversary.
But Jack never missed a chance to belittle Mark. One Mother’s Day, after I treated our mom to a series of relaxing spa sessions and Jack presented her with an expensive, flashy watch, he couldn’t resist making a nasty comment about my husband. “This watch is a limited edition,” he bragged, “The salesperson knew I was a lawyer and gave it to me right away.” He smirked, looking at Mark, “An electrician could never afford something like this.”
Mark just smiled, choosing to ignore Jack’s insults, but I could see the hurt in his eyes. Jack kept mocking Mark’s job like it was something insignificant. Little did Jack know that Mark could buy his entire law firm and still have money left over! But we stayed quiet, knowing that Jack would get what was coming to him.
And then it happened, sooner than I thought.
A few weeks later, at a family barbecue, Jack made his usual grand entrance—late, of course, rolling up in his shiny Porsche with his fiancée on his arm. He strutted around, bragging about his latest court win and the extravagant honeymoon he was planning for his upcoming wedding. I was about to compare my real designer purse to the knock-off he had bought for his fiancée when suddenly, we heard a commotion outside.
We all rushed out to see Jack’s prized Porsche being hooked up to a tow truck! Panic filled his face as he shouted at the driver, “This must be a mistake!” The driver simply shook his head. “Sorry, it’s being repossessed. You’re months behind on payments.”
Jack went pale, his confidence crumbling as he stood frozen in shock. His fiancée slipped quietly inside the house, clearly embarrassed. Alone and vulnerable, Jack finally admitted the truth—he had lost his job. A major case he mishandled led to his firm getting sued, and now no one wanted to hire him. His debts had piled up, and he could no longer afford his lavish lifestyle.
In that moment, I felt a strange mix of pity and satisfaction. Life had finally taught Jack the lesson in humility I had hoped he would learn. Without saying anything more, I walked over to him and said softly, “Maybe this is a sign to rethink things.” For the first time, Jack’s arrogance faded, replaced by a vulnerability I had never seen before. “I guess I had this coming,” he admitted quietly.
Before I could say more, Mark stepped forward and placed a hand on Jack’s shoulder. “If you need work, I could use an extra set of hands in my company. It’s not glamorous, but it’s honest work and pays well.”
Jack looked stunned. “You’d actually hire me after everything I said?”
Mark smiled warmly. “Everyone deserves a second chance.”
That evening, as the sun dipped below the horizon, Jack accepted Mark’s offer. He started working hard, beginning from the bottom and learning the trade. Over time, his arrogance faded away, replaced by a newfound respect for honest labor and deep gratitude for the chance he’d been given.
Karma had done its job, but in the end, our family was still there for Jack. The road ahead wouldn’t be easy, but we stood by him every step of the way. And maybe, just maybe, he became a better man because of it.
