Hannah’s 25th birthday was supposed to be a joyful occasion, but when her father walked in with her best friend on his arm, she knew she had to make him pay. Little did he know, Hannah had a plan that would turn his world upside down at her upcoming graduation.
“Happy birthday, kiddo!” her father greeted, but his cheerful words fell flat. The room was decorated with balloons and banners, but something was seriously wrong. The tension in the air was undeniable. “What’s the big fuss?” he asked, completely oblivious.
Hannah could barely believe her eyes—her dad had shown up at her birthday party with Jessica, her closest friend, as his date. “What is Jess doing with you?” she blurted out, trying to recover from the shock.
Her dad chuckled, “What do you mean? We’re together, in love!”
“Are you serious?” Hannah could hardly believe what she was hearing. “Mom is right here, and everyone is watching!”
He shrugged, acting like it was no big deal. “So what? It’s her problem. I don’t care how she or anyone else feels. This is my life, and I’m going to enjoy it.”
Hannah glanced over at her mother, who stood silently, tears streaming down her face. Unable to bear the sight, her mother quietly walked away. That was the breaking point for Hannah. “If I had known you’d pull something like this, I wouldn’t have invited you!” she shouted, turning her anger toward her father. “And Jess, how could you do this? You were my best friend!”
Jessica didn’t flinch. “Hannah, I’m sorry, but if you can’t accept this, that’s your problem, not mine,” she said coldly.
Hannah was stunned. “Just go! Both of you, leave now!” she screamed.
Her father sneered, “You’re overreacting, Hannah. It’s not like your mom and I are still together. I’m just bringing someone new into our lives.”
“No, Dad. I’m not overreacting, and I don’t want to talk about this anymore. You need to leave now. This is Mom’s house, and we’re celebrating without you.”
“Fine, we’re out of here,” he snapped, and they walked out.
Hannah watched them leave, then turned back to her mom and hugged her tightly. “I’m so sorry, Mom. I had no idea they would show up like this…”
“It’s alright, my love,” her mother whispered, “Thank you.”
But Hannah couldn’t shake the image of all the guests staring at her mom with pity. She hated that they saw her as a helpless victim.
The next Sunday, as Hannah and her mom sipped tea in their cozy living room, the tension was still there. It had only been a week since the birthday disaster, and her mom was still struggling with the shock. Even though the divorce was recent, her mom missed her dad.
“Mom, I’m really excited about graduation next month,” Hannah said, trying to brighten the mood. “It’s a huge milestone for me.”
Her mother smiled softly, pride shining in her eyes. “Oh, Hannah, I’m so proud of you. You’ve worked so hard for this day.” But then she sighed, her smile fading. “Seeing Jessica with your father was hard. She’ll be graduating too, won’t she?”
Hannah squeezed her mom’s hand gently. “Yes, it was awful. But you’re stronger than this, Mom. You deserve so much better.”
Her mom’s eyes filled with tears. “Hannah, it’s just so hard. I never expected this from Jessica. She was like a daughter to me, and now…this.”
Hannah comforted her mom, but deep inside, she knew she had to do something to make things right. She had a plan brewing, but she kept it to herself for now.
That Thursday, Hannah met Tom, a kind, familiar face from her childhood, at a small café near the university. Tom had once worked with her dad, and he had always been friendly to Hannah. As they caught up, Hannah shared her plan with him, and to her relief, he agreed to help.
As graduation day approached, Hannah’s anticipation grew. The night needed to be perfect—not just for her, but for her mom, too. When the big day finally arrived, she was ready.
Hannah arrived at the graduation hall, where excitement buzzed in the air. She spotted her father and Jessica entering the auditorium, looking smug and confident. But that confidence was about to be shattered.
A little while later, her mom walked in—with Tom by her side. They looked like the perfect couple, and Hannah couldn’t help but smile. When her father and Jessica noticed them, their expressions changed from smugness to shock.
“Tom? What are you doing here?” her father asked, clearly taken aback.
Tom smiled coolly. “Supporting a dear friend and her daughter,” he replied, wrapping an arm around Hannah’s mom.
Jessica’s face paled as she realized what was happening. “You said he was just a coworker,” she whispered to Hannah’s father, who was clearly flustered.
Hannah’s plan had worked perfectly. Throughout the evening, her mom and Tom laughed and danced, looking happier than ever. Her father, on the other hand, couldn’t hide his irritation. He pushed Jessica away when she tried to dance with him, the realization dawning that he had lost the best thing in his life.
As the night came to an end, Hannah hugged her mom tightly, thrilled with how everything had turned out. “You deserve all the happiness in the world,” she said, smiling.
Her mom left the hall with Tom, happier than she had been in a long time. Hannah knew her father was now regretting his choices, but it was too late. Her plan to show him that her mom could find happiness without him had been a huge success.
In the end, justice was served, and Hannah couldn’t have been more satisfied.
