For anyone in a job where they’re on camera regularly, it’s no secret that people will criticize your appearance. In today’s world, social media lets people throw out their opinions—good or bad—anonymously from behind their screens. Journalists like Kristen Nicole are no strangers to this kind of scrutiny. But even though she’s used to being judged for her looks, Kristen was still shocked when viewers complained about her baby bump.
Kristen, a “Good Day Chicago” news anchor, was already a mom to one child, and she was excited to be expecting another little one. But instead of celebrating her pregnancy, some viewers thought it was necessary to complain that her baby bump was visible.
Kristen was seated behind the news desk wearing a stylish blue dress when the complaints started pouring in. According to AOL, she didn’t let the negativity get to her for long. Instead, she responded quickly and with a bit of sass on her Facebook page.
“LET ME SAVE YOU SOME TROUBLE,” Kristen wrote. “My email address is ***, but if you’re writing to tell me that you’re offended by the sight of my baby bump, don’t hold your breath waiting for a response. It’s not coming. I wear this dress probably once a month. No one has EVER had a problem with it. Wear it almost 8 months pregnant? Woah…disgusting, right? (insert massive eye roll).”
She didn’t stop there. Kristen had a message for the three viewers who emailed her complaints directly. “To Karen, Gene, and Sabrina who wrote to me today, use your time better,” she said. “Pay someone a compliment. Do a good deed.”
She also took a moment to thank the many people who had reached out with words of support, saying, “To everyone else who has sent messages of congratulations and well wishes, you are keeping me motivated through these last 6 weeks. We’re finally in the home stretch!”
Despite all the positive messages Kristen had been receiving, it was clear that some viewers were more focused on finding something to complain about. According to Kristen, three people—Karen, Gene, and Sabrina—had each sent her an email criticizing the fact that she was wearing a form-fitting dress that showed off her baby bump.
One of the women even went so far as to accuse Kristen of wearing a fake bump just to get more ratings. Another viewer took issue with the fact that Kristen wasn’t wearing what they thought was more appropriate maternity wear.
Kristen’s response? She wasn’t going to let the haters get to her. She was proud of her pregnancy and not going to hide her excitement just because a few people were uncomfortable with her appearance. Kristen’s words sent a clear message: no matter what people say, she would wear what makes her feel good, and the support from her fans would carry her through the rest of her pregnancy.
