NFL reporter Doug Kyed recently shared the heartbreaking news that his two-year-old daughter, Hallie, passed away, nine months after being diagnosed with leukemia.
In April 2023, the Kyed family was hit with devastating news—little Hallie had leukemia. Doug, who works for the Boston Herald, took to Instagram to reveal that his beloved daughter lost her battle with the illness on January 21, 2024.
Doug explained that Hallie’s condition worsened after she relapsed following a bone marrow transplant.
“Hallie passed away peacefully in her sleep on Sunday morning while Jen and I held her hands in bed,” Doug wrote. “We’re completely lost and heartbroken without Hallie. Our lives will never be the same.”
When Hallie relapsed, Doug and his family tried to stay positive, even though they knew the road ahead would be tough.
“I’m choosing to stay positive,” Doug shared back then. “Hallie has overcome every challenge that AML has thrown at her so far. This is going to be her biggest battle yet, but if anyone can win, it’s our fierce little Hallie Bear.”
Despite their hopes, Doug admitted that they understood how serious the situation was when Hallie relapsed after her bone marrow transplant. Knowing this, the family made sure to spend precious time together at the hospital during Hallie’s final days.
“We knew the prognosis was poor, but we held out hope for remission because Hallie had been so brave, strong, and resilient throughout her entire nine-month battle with acute myeloid leukemia and all the complications that came with it,” Doug explained.
Acute myeloid leukemia (AML), according to the American Cancer Society, starts in the bone marrow but quickly spreads into the blood. It can then move to other parts of the body like the lymph nodes, liver, spleen, and central nervous system.
Doug revealed to the Boston Herald that he had spent nearly half of his nights at Boston’s Children’s Hospital since Hallie’s diagnosis last year.
“My wife and I have been taking turns caring for Hallie and our 5-year-old daughter, Olivia, at home,” Doug said.
Doug’s wife, Jen, expressed the overwhelming pain of losing their daughter.
“There is a giant hole in my heart, and the pain is excruciating,” Jen shared. “I will never understand why or how something so horrible could happen.”
Rest in peace, Hallie.
