In August 2022, Olivia Newton-John passed away due to complications from breast cancer. Despite her serious illness, the singer continued working in the studio on a new album until shortly before her death: “Just The Two Of Us: The Duets Collection (Vol. 1).” The duet album features numerous prominent voices, including Cliff Richard, Paul Anka, John Travolta, Barry Gibb, and Mariah Carey. The album is set to be released on May 5, 2023. Now, the first duet from the collection, along with a video, has been released: “Jolene” with none other than country legend Dolly Parton.
The video shows the two singers together in the studio. At the beginning, Dolly Parton addresses the camera, saying, “I’m so excited to be working with Olivia Newton-John, one of my favorite musicians. We’ve always been very close over the years… I’m just so proud to be a part of this duet project where she sings one of my absolute favorite songs that I wrote, ‘Jolene.’ And she says it’s one of her favorite songs, so why not do a duet on one of our favorite songs?”
In a statement, the 77-year-old country singer explained that the recording session for “Jolene” was the last time the two friends saw each other before Newton-John’s passing. “I’ve loved every moment I could spend with her,” said Parton. “I’ve always been inspired by her courage, her tenderness, her willingness, and her determination. I can’t wait to hear the album, and Olivia, may you rest in peace. You’ve left a void that no one else will ever fill.”
