Patti Scialfa Opens Up About Her Battle with Cancer
Patti Scialfa, the talented wife of rock legend Bruce Springsteen and a key member of the E Street Band, has bravely revealed that she has been fighting cancer for several years.
In a touching moment during Bruce’s new documentary, Rock Diary: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 8, Patti shared her diagnosis of multiple myeloma, a type of blood cancer, which she received back in 2018.
This news has hit home for many fans, as Patti explained how her illness has affected her ability to tour with Bruce and the band. “This affects my immune system, so I have to be careful what I choose to do and where I choose to go,” she said in the documentary.
Although it’s been tough for her, she has found joy in attending a few shows here and there. “Every once in a while, I come to a show or two and I can sing a few songs on stage, and that’s been a treat. That’s the new normal for me right now, and I’m OK with that,” she added, showing her resilience and positivity.
Balancing Family and Music
In a previous interview with the Asbury Park Press, Patti explained her decision to play only a few shows on Bruce’s current tour, which kicked off in February 2023. She wanted to spend more time with her granddaughter, Lily Springsteen, who was born in July 2022.
“I didn’t feel as needed in a way because there were a lot of musicians on stage,” she shared. After doing the first few shows, she realized that the band was in great shape without her full-time presence. “I thought, ‘This is good. This is completely intact. There’s not much room for me to add anything special,’” she said.
Patti also took this time to work on her solo album, something she hadn’t been able to focus on while Bruce was busy in the studio.
“The main thing was I have a record that I couldn’t have finished when Bruce was home because he’s in the studio all the time. So I took that opportunity to do my record,” she explained. It’s clear that while Patti is navigating her health challenges, she is also dedicated to her family and her music.
Bruce Springsteen’s Health Challenges
Patti isn’t the only one facing health issues in the Springsteen family. In September 2023, Bruce had to postpone his remaining tour dates for the year due to treatment for peptic ulcer disease.
Then, in early summer 2024, he faced another setback, this time due to “vocal issues.” Thankfully, this only affected three dates, and fans are hopeful for his recovery.
A Community of Support
As Patti continues her battle with multiple myeloma, she has shown incredible strength and grace. Many fans and friends are sending their love and prayers her way. “My prayers are with Patti Scialfa as she continues to battle multiple myeloma,” one fan expressed, highlighting the support from the community during this challenging time.
Patti and Bruce have always been known for their powerful music and their deep connection with fans. Now, as they face these personal health challenges, their journey reminds us of the importance of love, family, and resilience.
