Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have had a rocky relationship with the British monarchy for a long time, but one particular “slap in the face” was the final straw for Harry, according to a royal expert.
Relations between the Sussexes and the Royal Family have been tense for years. Harry and Meghan have made significant efforts to distance themselves, even moving to the U.S. to start a new life away from royal duties. They’ve made several public accusations against the Royal Family, including in their interview with Oprah and Harry’s memoir, “Spare.” The Royal Family, in turn, has reportedly lost trust in Harry and Meghan, with King Charles and Prince William feeling especially hurt.
The exact reason behind Harry and Meghan’s departure from the UK might be debated for years, but there’s a clue about what pushed Harry over the edge. The Daily Mirror cites royal expert and author Tom Quinn, who claims that Harry was deeply upset when King Charles decided to take away Frogmore Cottage, their royal residence in the UK.
This happened last year, three years after Harry and Meghan stepped down from their royal roles. Losing Frogmore Cottage was painful, but Quinn says Harry saw his father’s decision as “vindictive.”
Quinn told the Mirror, “The story of Harry’s change of residence may have come out only in the past few days, but Harry quietly changed his primary residence as long ago as June 29, 2023 – on the very day he and Meghan were evicted from Frogmore Cottage on the Windsor estate. That’s the date given in new business documents filed in the US this week.”
Quinn added, “Few people realized what a slap in the face the eviction from Frogmore felt like for Harry – it was the last straw.”
Quinn also revealed that Harry was “absolutely furious and in tears about being evicted from Frogmore.” He felt King Charles “had no right” to force them out and saw the move as “vindictive.”
“Harry was absolutely furious and in tears about being evicted from Frogmore – he felt his father had no right to do it and that it was purely vindictive,” Quinn told the Mirror.
“Harry took it as a cruel rejection – a painful reminder of all that he felt when his father fought with his mother during their long, drawn-out, painful divorce.”
The future of Harry’s relationship with his father is uncertain. Harry traveled to the UK to see Charles after the King announced his cancer diagnosis, but their meeting was brief, lasting only a couple of hours.
Harry is expected to return to the UK in May to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Invictus Games. Reports say Prince William and Kate Middleton won’t be meeting with him, but other sources suggest King Charles wants to see more of his U.S.-based grandchildren, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.
