Tiger Woods is one of the greatest sports stars ever, and I’ve always admired his competitive spirit, dedication, and incredible golf skills.
But Tiger Woods isn’t just amazing on the golf course. Off the course, he does a lot of good through The Tiger Woods Foundation, which helps children worldwide with education and supports underprivileged minority students.
Despite all the good things you can say about Woods, many people don’t like him. A lot of them turned their backs on him after the huge scandal in 2009.
Back then, The National Enquirer revealed that Woods had been cheating on his Swedish wife, Elin Nordegren. According to some reports, he had affairs with at least 18 different women.
Just days after the news broke, Woods left his home in his car, only to crash into a fire hydrant and a tree. It happened so fast – the mighty Tiger Woods had fallen.
How could one of the world’s greatest and most popular athletes mess up so badly? Tiger Woods had everything – a beautiful wife, adorable children, lots of money, and a fantastic career.
I remember the first time I read that Woods was cheating on Elin Nordegren, and I thought, “What the hell is he thinking?”
Sure, it’s history now, but I still wonder what happened to Nordegren and the children. There’s an answer to that, but let’s start from the beginning.
How Elin and Tiger Met
Tiger Woods met Elin Nordegren thanks to Jesper Parnevik, a Swedish professional golfer who lived in the US. Parnevik hired Nordegren as a nanny for his children and introduced her to Woods during the Open Championship in 2001.
The year before, Woods had wanted to meet Nordegren, but she was dating someone else. According to Parnevik’s wife, Mia Parnevik, many golf pros were interested in their beautiful, blonde nanny.
Nordegren, who dreamed of becoming a child psychologist, had no interest in dating Tiger Woods.
“Tiger was OK with that,” Mia Parnevik said. “There was a big line of single golfers wanting to meet her. They were gaga over her.”
But somehow, Woods and Nordegren fell in love. They got engaged in 2003 during a four-day vacation at a South African game reserve. They married the following year at the 19th hole at the Sandy Lane resort in Barbados. The wedding was “ultra-private,” with celebrities like Michael Jordan and Charles Barkley among the guests.
The couple had two children together. In 2007, their daughter Sam Alexis was born, and in 2009, their son Charlie Axel was born.
But by 2009, it was clear their marriage was in trouble. In December, everything exploded when Woods’ affairs were exposed in the media. Parnevik, who had introduced Woods to Nordegren, felt remorseful.
“I’m kind of filled with sorrow for Elin since me and my wife are at fault for hooking her up with him, and we probably thought he was a better guy than he is,” Parnevik said.
Woods took a break from golf to focus on his family and marriage, but the damage was too great. The couple divorced in 2010, and Nordegren reportedly received $100 million in the settlement.
Nordegren bought a luxury house in Florida, where she and the children have lived since then, according to Forbes.
In recent years, Nordegren’s relationship with Woods has improved. They are now friends, mainly for the sake of their children.
“Having the relationship that I have now with her is fantastic. She’s one of my best friends. We’re able to pick up the phone, and we talk to each other all the time. We both know that the most important things in our lives are our kids. I wish I would have known that back then,” Woods told Time.
“My relationship with Tiger is centered around our children, and we are doing really good – we really are – and I am so happy that is the case. He is a great father,” Nordegren told People in 2014.
Nordegren never gave up on her dream of becoming a psychologist. After nine years at Rollins University, she graduated in psychology.
She was one of the keynote speakers at the college’s commencement ceremony and joked about her journey as a college student while hearing jokes about her divorce from Woods.
“I was surprised when they called and asked if I wanted to give this speech. In the press, I have been called a woman of few words and criticized by the media for not talking very much. A commencement speech is meant to inspire. And when I started to think what I should say to you all today, I got a little scared. What words could I use to inspire us all after a long journey in college?
One week after that phone call, I got off an American Airlines plane and one of the flight attendants gave me a note. I hurriedly took the note and said a quick ‘Thank you’ and continued to pick up my bags. Later, I finally had time to read what it said. The note read: ‘Thank you for being my inspiration, greetings from another single mom.’ I was touched by the beautiful words from a total stranger.”
After her broken marriage with Woods, Nordegren dated the now-deceased Chris Cline, an American billionaire entrepreneur, and philanthropist.
In June 2019, Nordegren announced that she was expecting a baby again, this time with former NFL player Jordan Cameron.
“She is super happy and I am super happy that I have my ninth grandchild, yes it is wonderful,” Nordegren’s mother, Barbro Holmberg, told the Swedish magazine Svensk Dam.
Their boy was born in October 2019.
Today, the 41-year-old Elin Nordegren has built an independent, successful life away from the paparazzi. According to media in Sweden, she’s obtained an official license to consult in mental health and psychology matters.
She lives with her husband Jordan Cameron in a luxury villa in Florida, worth around 14 million dollars. The 25,000 square-foot home has 11 bedrooms, 15 bathrooms, a wine cellar, two kitchens, a movie theatre, and a gym.
According to Tiger, he and Elin now have a healthy relationship, and they continue to look after and support their children. In 2020, Elin was seen during the final round of the PNC Championship in Florida.
Alongside her daughter Sam, they watched Charlie Woods play alongside Tiger. Notah Begay III, a professional golfer, and an analyst at the Golf Channel, is Tiger Woods’ longtime friend. He shed some new light on the relationship between Elin and Tiger.
“It’s been incredible,” Begay III said. “You never know how a parent separation is going to affect the kids, and both Tiger and Elin have made it such a huge priority to protect the interests of their kids and their privacy. Tiger talked about it yesterday in his post-round comments, making sure he takes the brunt of the media requests here, trying to make sure that both Sam and Charlie, from both Elin and Tiger, have a nice quality childhood like anybody else out there.”
