In the home of Bre Burger and her wife Amanda, there are already quite a few dogs with special needs.
For eight years, the couple has been adopting dogs that nobody else wants, providing them with a home where they can finally feel comfortable forever.
Their newest roommate is named Marv. The little sweetheart has a set of teeth that would make most people rather run away…
On the search for a home
Several months ago, the Burgers discovered Marv on social media. At the time, he was in the care of a friend.
“I was constantly worried about who would end up taking him, as if he already belonged to us – that was the only way to ensure he would get the best life he deserves,”
says Bre.
“I was aware of the level of care he would need, and that most people wouldn’t provide that.”
So in June 2023, Marv moves into the Burgers’ house – along with his set of teeth that, to be honest, one would more likely associate with a vampire than a little dog.
Little, sweet vampire
The exact reason for Marv’s unusual teeth is still unknown.
“Marv has a genetic disorder, but we don’t know which one,”
explains Bre.
His mouth is overcrowded with teeth, his lower jaw and tongue are too short. A second row of teeth grows in his lower jaw, and the two long, pointed fangs in his upper jaw give him the appearance of a vampire.
But Bre and Amanda have already found a way to manage it.
Marv receives water through a plastic syringe because his short tongue makes it impossible for him to drink on his own.
And they have a wonderful arrangement for eating as well:
“I sit and support him with towels, tie a bib around him, and feed him with a spoon. He always eagerly anticipates that,”
says Bre.
After feeding, they diligently follow up with tooth brushing, as food remnants tend to get stuck in his overcrowded mouth.
But his absolute favorite treat is Mama’s fingers! He nibbles on them with delight when he’s feeling comfortable.
“It’s just touching that he has the ability to connect with people and make them happy,”
Bre raves.
