The Best Dog Beds

The right dog bed for your canine companion should be comfortable and suitable for lounging or sleeping. It should also be able to endure a little slobber and snacking, so the ability to wipe up spills or toss the bed’s cover in the washing machine is a must.

We tested more than 60 top dog beds, separating the lumpy and the poorly made from the very best. Each of our testers tried out a different dog bed at home with their dog for more than three weeks, giving their dogs time to nap, snooze, and dreamily kick their legs in them. But what’s comfortable for one dog won’t necessarily suit another, so we curated a list of the top-ranking dog beds to complement a variety of dogs and their needs.

How We Tested

We conducted extensive research to identify popular and high-performing dog beds available in various shapes and sizes. Subsequently, we selected 22 dog beds for practical testing in households with dogs. Additionally, we separately evaluated 21 beds tailored for dogs with orthopedic requirements and another 22 cooling dog beds.

Each participating household received a dog bed tailored to their pet’s preferences, considering factors such as chew resistance and suitability for crate use. Over a three-week period, our canine test subjects integrated these beds into their daily routines, engaging in activities like napping, snacking, playing, lounging, and sleeping. Throughout this period, the human observers collected insights, recorded experiences, and provided feedback on aspects such as quality, comfort, size, ease of cleaning, and value. Participants were also asked if they would recommend the dog bed to friends and family.

Upon concluding the trial, we compiled and analyzed the feedback from our testing teams. Using this information, we ranked and categorized our top picks to simplify the process of finding the perfect dog bed that aligns with your pet’s needs, habits, and preferences.

What To Look for In A Dog Bed
Support and Mobility

If your dog is in their senior years or has conditions such as arthritis, you might consider beds that provide orthopedic support. It’s important to choose a bed that allows for easy entry and exit, considering your dog’s mobility. The Pet Fusion Ultimate Dog Bed, for instance, features three bolstered sides and a low entry barrier to ensure unrestricted access. On the other hand, for young and healthy dogs, a simple model that allows them to assume their preferred sleeping position may be suitable.

Sleeping Style

Pay attention to your dog’s sleeping habits. If they tend to dig before settling down, the Tuft & Needle Dog Bed, with its robust cotton-canvas cover, is designed to endure their pawing. For dogs that find comfort in burrowing, the FurHaven Snuggery Burrow Dog Bed could be their dream bed. If your dog enjoys splaying, lying, and playing, then our top pick overall, the FurHaven Plush & Suede Orthopedic Sofa, is likely the ideal choice to consider.

Size

The size of your pet, including their weight, length, and height, should guide your choice of bed size. Ensure that the bed provides enough space for your dog to stretch out or curl up comfortably. Additionally, consider the available space in the area where you plan to position the bed to avoid any inconvenience or tripping hazards.
