A memorial to honor a heroic police dog, who once saved his handler’s life, is being planned in a park in his home county.
This incredible dog, a German shepherd named Finn—often called Police Dog (PD) Finn—showed bravery beyond words in 2016. Finn’s handler, PC Dave Wardell, was chasing an armed suspect in Stevenage, Hertfordshire. During the dangerous encounter, Finn stepped in to protect PC Wardell and was badly injured while doing so.
PC Wardell, now retired, has always said he owes his life to Finn. “If it wasn’t for Finn, I wouldn’t be here today,” he shared emotionally. Even after being stabbed, Finn’s bravery ensured that PC Wardell escaped more serious harm.
Finn survived his injuries and returned to work for a short time before retiring. After a life filled with service and love, Finn passed away in 2023 at the age of 14. Now, thanks to a successful fundraising effort, plans are underway to create a permanent statue in Finn’s honor.
For eight years, PC Wardell and Finn were inseparable. The bond they shared was unbreakable. On the fateful night of October 5, 2016, they were on duty together, searching for a suspect who had threatened a cab driver with a gun. As they closed in on the armed robber, the situation turned dangerous.
A young suspect, wielding a knife, attacked. Finn jumped to shield PC Wardell and was gravely wounded in the process. PC Wardell was also stabbed during the confrontation, but both he and Finn survived. Their recovery took time, and the traumatic event left its mark on both of them.
The suspect was later caught and sent to prison, but the attack on Finn highlighted the need for better protection for service animals.
In 2019, “Finn’s Law” was introduced. This law made it harder for people who harm service animals to claim self-defense. It was a huge step forward in recognizing the sacrifices that animals like Finn make every day.
Mr. Wardell has been passionate about honoring Finn’s memory. He’s also advocated for greater appreciation of all service animals. Through his efforts, the memorial campaign raised around £40,000, paving the way for a statue dedicated not just to Finn, but to all police dogs.
Speaking about the memorial, Mr. Wardell said, “This is very important and heartfelt, and it will endure well beyond my years. People will be able to visit, pay their respects, and learn about Finn’s story.” He added, “It’s a way for future generations to understand the legacy of Finn and other police dogs who are so vital to this nation.”
Although the exact location and artist behind the statue are still under wraps, Mr. Wardell assured everyone that the sculptor chosen is perfect for the job.
“You’ll know if you’ve had a special bond with a dog—or any animal,” Mr. Wardell said, reflecting on his extraordinary friendship with Finn. “This memorial, along with Finn’s Law, is his legacy.”
The statue will stand as a powerful reminder of Finn’s courage and dedication, inspiring people for years to come.
