Single Mother of Four Purchases Pre-Owned Vehicle, Seller Advises Her to Check the Trunk Upon Arrival Home

Share this:

Jennifer was a single mother of four, trying to keep her family afloat after her husband, Adam, left her. He walked out when she got pregnant with their fourth child, leaving behind a broken family and harsh words: “Another child to feed? No way! I’ve had enough!”

Jennifer was heartbroken. She never imagined Adam would abandon them, especially when times were already tough. To make matters worse, Adam stopped supporting their kids financially, claiming he couldn’t find work because he hadn’t finished college. This left Jennifer scrambling to find a way to support her children.

After giving birth, Jennifer quickly realized she needed to find a job to afford the essentials for her kids—diapers, milk, food. She walked around her local area, asking for work at shops and restaurants, but all she got were rejections. One employer bluntly said, “It’s hard to hire moms with young kids. There’s always something—sick children or no babysitter. Sorry, it’s too much to handle.”

With no luck finding work close to home, Jennifer looked for jobs in a nearby city. She could barely afford the cab fare and had to rely on her neighbors to watch her kids. When she got to the city, she spotted an opening for a housekeeping job at a hotel. Desperate, she walked in and applied. The HR manager hired her on the spot, saying, “We need staff badly, especially with the busy summer season coming up.”

Jennifer was thrilled. She returned home and told her children the good news: “Mommy finally got a job!”

But soon, Jennifer realized that her cab fares were eating up too much of her pay. She couldn’t afford to commute like that every day. What she really needed was her own car, but she had no money for one. After searching around, she found a second-hand car for sale. She nervously approached the owner and asked, “Would you be able to sell this car for $5,000? I’m a single mom with four kids, and I need a car to get to my job.”

Touched by her situation, the owner, Jeff, agreed. “If you can get the money by tomorrow, I’ll sell it to you for $5,000,” he told her.

Jennifer was grateful but still didn’t know where she would find the money. She tried to get a loan, but the bank turned her down because of her bad credit. As she started to lose hope, Jennifer remembered something precious: a gold chain necklace that her mother had left her before passing away. It had been in their family for generations.

With tears in her eyes, she decided she had no choice but to sell it. “I’m sorry, Mom,” she whispered as she took the necklace to the pawnshop.

At the pawnshop, the necklace was valued at $5,500. Jennifer was relieved. It was enough to buy the car and have a little left for her children’s needs.

The next day, Jennifer returned to the dealership with an envelope containing $5,000. She handed it to Jeff and thanked him. “You have no idea how much this car will help me and my children,” she said, grateful beyond words.

Jeff smiled warmly. “Congratulations on your new car. It’s a great purchase,” he said. Then, just before Jennifer drove off, he added, “Oh, and when you get home, check the trunk. I left something there for your kids.”

Jennifer thanked him again and drove home, but in the busyness of her life—working, taking her kids to school and daycare—she forgot to check the trunk. Days later, she found a note in the glove compartment. It read: “I hope you and your children like the gift I left in the trunk. May it help you greatly.”

Curious, Jennifer rushed to open the trunk. At first, she saw only a white envelope. It looked familiar, and then she realized—it was the same envelope she had used to give Jeff the $5,000. Inside was the full amount, untouched. Tears filled Jennifer’s eyes. Jeff had given the money back to her.

She drove straight back to the dealership to thank Jeff. When she found him, her voice shook with emotion. “Why would you do this for me?” she asked.

Jeff smiled kindly. “The world throws challenges at you, and it’s up to you to rise above them. I’m proud of how strong you are for your children. You need this money more than I do. Just remember, one day, when you can, pay it forward.”

Jennifer hugged him, overwhelmed by his generosity.

Lessons from the Story:

  • Compassion goes a long way. Jeff could have just sold the car and moved on, but he chose to help Jennifer when she needed it the most.
  • If there’s a will, there’s a way. Despite being knocked down time after time, Jennifer never gave up on her goal of supporting her family. She kept pushing forward, and in the end, she found a way.
