Sir Elton John and his husband, David Furnish, have been together for over twenty years. They share two sons, Zachary and Elijah, whom they are raising to be humble and to appreciate the value of money.
Sir Elton John, a critically acclaimed musician, has released 32 albums and shows no signs of stopping. Even at 73 years old, he is still in high demand for performances. Despite his thriving career, Elton is now focusing more on his marriage with David Furnish and their two sons.
The Start of a Whirlwind Romance
Before their life became about raising their boys, John and Furnish had a whirlwind romance that started in 1993. The “Sacrifice” singer returned to his house in Windsor and wanted to meet new people. He asked a friend to organize a dinner, and among the guests was Furnish. John immediately felt a connection. He loved how Furnish was a bit shy and dressed well.
The next day, they went on a date, and their long-term relationship began. After nine years in a civil partnership, they decided to get married in 2014. The couple sent out invites on Instagram, making their special day even more unique. Their sons, Zachary and Elijah, played a big role as ring bearers.
The Joy of Parenthood
Sharing their union with their kids was heartwarming for John and Furnish, especially since their journey to becoming parents wasn’t easy. It all started in 2009 when they connected with a Ukrainian boy named Lev at an orphanage for children with HIV.
They wanted to help him as he came from a broken family, but the government wouldn’t allow it because Lev was considered too old. Nevertheless, they continued to support him.
This experience made John realize he could be a father. He admitted, “I never thought I would have kids because I was too old.” Soon after, they welcomed their first son, Zachary, in 2010 via surrogate, and Elijah followed in 2013.
Raising Kids Out of the Spotlight
Despite their busy lifestyle, John and Furnish wanted to be hands-on with their children. “We don’t want to put the raising of children into the hands of nannies and housekeepers,” said Furnish. Becoming parents was the best decision for them, and their main goal is to raise their sons to be happy and healthy.
John wrote a touching letter to his sons, expressing how they have changed his life: “Zachary and Elijah, you two are the greatest gifts I have ever been given. You have filled my heart with love and my life with purpose and meaning in ways I didn’t think were possible.”
A New Perspective on Life
Parenthood has changed John’s relationship with money. As a father, he now values quality time with Zachary and Elijah more than a hit song or a painting. He confessed that he and Furnish used to spend a lot because they were used to being the center of attention. Since their sons arrived, they’ve cut back significantly.
John wants his children to appreciate the value of money. He doesn’t plan to leave them his entire estate, aiming to balance giving them a good life and keeping them grounded. “Of course, I want to leave my boys in a very sound financial state. But it’s terrible to give kids a silver spoon. It ruins their life,” he explained.
Teaching the Value of Money
From a young age, John and Furnish have been teaching Zachary and Elijah about spending and saving. In 2016, John shared that his boys received £3 ($3.74) pocket money for working in the kitchen or garden. Each coin was divided into charity, savings, and spending. As they grew older, their chores included cleaning their rooms, earning stars for completed tasks.
Striving for Normalcy
John and Furnish know their children won’t have a typical childhood, but they try to maintain normalcy. John revealed that his kids live like locals and aren’t “stuck behind the gates of a mansion.” When asked about raising children in the spotlight, John said he’s aware of the downsides but finds the public “brilliant” and “not hostile,” especially when asking for photos with his family.
John doesn’t want to miss out on moments with his children due to fame. He enjoys picking up and dropping off his sons at school and spending family time outside their mansion, whether it’s going out for pizza or catching a movie.
Elton John Shows Off His Sons
Although John and Furnish usually keep their sons off social media, the “Rocket Man” singer once shared a rare photo of Furnish, their sons, and their godmother, Lady Gaga. Though sad to miss the moment himself, John sent his love.
Fans were shocked at how much Zachary and Elijah had grown. “My goodness, the boys are getting tall. Such handsome little gentlemen,” commented one fan. “Look at these gorgeous boys and their papa and Godma!” added another.
John wrote another heartwarming letter to his sons, expressing his deep love: “Zachary and Elijah, you two are the greatest gifts I have ever been given. You have filled my heart with love and my life with purpose and meaning in ways I didn’t think were possible.”
John and Furnish are proud of the beautiful family they’ve built. One thing they want their children to remember as they grow is the unwavering love and support from their parents.

I cannot be happier for the both of you. I love the values that you are teaching your children that says a lot about the person you are. They are too very lucky little boys to have such great parents.
