Next month, shoppers at Target will notice fewer Pride-themed items. The retailer is reducing its Pride merchandise this year due to backlash from conservative groups that negatively impacted sales.
Longstanding Support and Recent Controversy
Target has supported the LGBTQ community for many years, offering a wide range of Pride merchandise. However, last year, they faced significant backlash from conservative groups. The trouble started with a women’s bathing suit labeled as “tuck-friendly,” which critics wrongly claimed was aimed at children. This misinformation led to a boycott by some right-wing activists, who even destroyed Pride displays and threatened store employees.
Due to these actions, Target had to remove Pride items from some stores.
New Strategy for Pride Merchandise
To address last year’s issues, Target has adjusted its approach to Pride merchandise. This year, the focus will be on items like adult apparel, home goods, and food and beverages, chosen based on customer feedback.
The 2024 Pride collection will be available online and in select stores, chosen based on how well they have sold such merchandise in the past.
Target’s Ongoing Commitment
Even with fewer items, Target remains committed to the LGBTQ community. A Target spokesperson told CNN, “Our commitment has not wavered. We aim to foster a welcoming and supportive environment for our LGBTQIA+ team members.” This is part of Target’s broader culture of care, which includes over 400,000 employees.
In summary, while the variety of Pride items at Target will be smaller this year, the company’s dedication to supporting the LGBTQ community and its employees remains strong.
Shoppers can still find select Pride items online or in some stores, based on availability and past sales data.
