Teaching Your Dog to Sit Pretty

Share this:

Teaching your dog to sit up is one of the cutest tricks that can be taught to a dog. But how can you get your beloved four-legged friend to sit pretty on command?

If you want to teach your dog to sit pretty, you should first equip yourself with plenty of treats. Because to lure the animal onto its hind legs, you have to offer it something. If you also bring a little patience, you are well prepared to train this trick with your four-legged friend.

Teaching Your Dog to Sit Pretty: How to Do It

To teach the dog to sit pretty, have it sit in front of you. Now take the treat in your hand and guide it over the dog’s nose upwards and slightly backward. This will tempt it to stand on its hind legs.

During this exercise, be careful not to hold the treat too far behind the nose, as it could fall backward. And that’s certainly not what you want to happen. Also, make sure not to hold the treat too high, as it might prompt the dog to jump. The video demonstrates how the training works:

Practice Makes the Master Dog

Don’t expect sitting pretty to be successful right away. Your dog will need some time to balance itself. The duration varies from animal to animal. Once your dog has learned the trick, you can add a verbal command. It’s important to be patient and not overwhelm your dog – after all, fun comes first. On the other hand, be careful not to give your dog too many treats during training sessions. Ideally, opt for healthy treats or dry food and avoid high-calorie snacks.

When Not to Teach the Trick

In general, any dog can learn this trick. However, if an animal has health issues such as joint problems, performing this trick may exacerbate these problems. Excessive weight or obesity can also pose health issues when learning the trick – in such cases, it’s better to focus on other exercises.
