A mother found herself in a heartbreaking situation after discovering her husband’s infidelity. She decided to divorce him, but this choice led to even more pain—she lost custody of her beloved daughter, Kelly. As the years went by, Kelly refused to see her, convinced by others that her mother was the villain in the story. Kelly didn’t reconnect with her mother until she ran out of money and needed help paying for college.
This woman had once thought she was incredibly lucky. She had married a wealthy man who not only spoiled her with luxury but also helped her entire family. Her parents were showered with expensive gifts, her sister’s credit card debts were paid off, and her brother was connected to a high-paying job through her husband’s influence.
Her husband was adored by her family, even during the tough times in their marriage, including the first time he cheated on her.
At that time, the woman had just given birth to Kelly. She was vulnerable and wanted to leave him, but her family pressured her to stay. They said that Kelly needed to grow up in a stable home with both parents. The woman, despite her pain, listened to her family. She convinced herself that maybe she hadn’t been the best wife while pregnant, and perhaps staying was the right thing to do for her daughter.
But years later, when Kelly was about 12, her husband cheated again. This time, the woman had had enough. She made up her mind to divorce him. Yet, once again, her in-laws and even her own parents tried to talk her out of it. They didn’t want a scandal to tarnish the family’s reputation, and her parents wanted to continue benefiting from her husband’s generosity. But the woman couldn’t bear it any longer and filed for divorce.
However, the divorce didn’t go in her favor. Her wealthy husband hired the best lawyers and, with the support of her in-laws and even her own parents, he won custody of Kelly. The woman was devastated. Though she received a decent alimony and settlement, nothing could replace the loss of her child.
Over the years, she tried her best to stay in touch with Kelly. She made efforts to see her daughter, but Kelly had been influenced by her father’s family and her own grandparents, who painted her mother as a bad person. They told Kelly that her mom was selfish for not forgiving her dad, even though he was “sorry.” So, as Kelly grew older, she began to resent her mother and refused to have any contact with her.
Kelly Reconnects – But Only for Money
During these dark times, the woman leaned heavily on her best friend, Tina. Tina was her rock, her confidante. Without Tina, the woman often said, she didn’t know how she would have survived the heartbreak of losing her daughter. Despite Kelly’s coldness, the woman never stopped reaching out, hoping one day her daughter would change her mind.
That day finally came, but it wasn’t what the woman had hoped for. Kelly reconnected with her, but not because she missed her mother. She needed money. Kelly’s father had lost his job and was even sued by a former employee. He had blown through all of his money, including what was supposed to be Kelly’s college fund. With nowhere else to turn, Kelly reached out to her mother for help.
The woman agreed to pay for Kelly’s grad school, but there was a catch. Kelly had to sign a contract giving up her right to inherit anything from her mother. This was because, over the years, the woman had rebuilt her life and developed a deep bond with Tina’s daughter, Laura, her goddaughter. In her heart, Laura had become more of a daughter to her than Kelly ever was. She decided that she wanted Laura to inherit the majority of her estate.
A Mother’s Dilemma
Of course, this decision didn’t sit well with her relatives. They warned her that making Kelly give up her inheritance could ruin any chance of rebuilding their relationship. But the woman wasn’t convinced. “I won’t lie and pretend it didn’t hurt that Kelly’s main reason for reaching out was money,” she confided. She didn’t want her relationship with Kelly to be based on greed.
Now, she faces a difficult decision. Should she leave everything to her goddaughter, who had been there for her in recent years, or should she reconsider her decision for the sake of rebuilding her relationship with Kelly, even though it seemed like Kelly only cared about money?
What would you do in her shoes? Should a mother prioritize the daughter who abandoned her or the one who stayed by her side?
