All I wanted for my 80th birthday was to see my daughter, so I decided to surprise her by driving to her house. When she opened the door, she looked startled. “Dad, why are you here?” she asked, her expression uneasy.
“I just wanted to spend my birthday with you,” I replied with a smile. But I wasn’t ready for what she said next. “Dad, you can’t stay,” she said. “I’m really busy right now.”
Feeling hurt, I offered to wait on the couch until she had some free time, but she insisted, “No, Dad, you really need to go right now.” Reluctantly, I turned back to my car, confused and disappointed.
As I was leaving, I heard noises from inside the house. Worried, I glanced through the window and saw two unfamiliar people inside. My concern for my daughter’s safety grew, so I called the police.
The officers arrived quickly and approached the house with caution. After what felt like an eternity, they came out with the two strangers in handcuffs. My daughter rushed out of the house, tears streaming down her face, and hugged me tightly.
“I’m so sorry, Dad,” she cried. “I was trying to protect you. Those men broke in just before you got here. I didn’t know what to do, and I didn’t want you to get hurt.”
I hugged her back, feeling relieved. “It’s okay, sweetheart. I’m just glad you’re safe.”
After we explained everything, the police assured us that the intruders would be taken care of. Despite the unexpected turn of events, I ended up having the best birthday I could have wished for, just by spending time with my daughter.
