On my 80th birthday, all I wanted was to see my daughter, so I decided to surprise her with a visit. When she opened the door, she looked nervous and immediately asked, “Dad, what are you doing here?”
I smiled and said, “I just wanted to spend my birthday with you.” But her response took me by surprise. “Dad, you can’t stay. I’ve got a lot going on.”
Feeling a bit hurt, I suggested, “I can wait on the sofa until you’re free,” but she quickly insisted, “No, Dad, you really need to leave right now.” Confused and disappointed, I slowly turned and headed back to my car.
As I walked away, I heard strange noises coming from inside the house. My worry grew, so I peeked through the window and saw two strangers moving around inside. Alarmed, I feared for my daughter’s safety and immediately called the police.
Within minutes, the police arrived and carefully approached the house. After a tense few moments, they emerged with the two strangers in handcuffs. My daughter, with tears streaming down her face, rushed out to hug me tightly.
“Dad, I’m so sorry,” she cried. “I was trying to protect you. Those men broke in just before you arrived. I didn’t know what to do, and I didn’t want you to get hurt.”
Relief and love washed over me as I held her close. “It’s alright, sweetheart. I’m just glad you’re safe,” I whispered.
After we gave our statements to the police, who assured us that the intruders would be brought to justice, my daughter and I spent the rest of the day together. What started as a simple visit turned into the most unforgettable birthday I could have ever imagined.
