Patrick Duffy’s Journey Through Love and Loss
Patrick Duffy’s world shattered in 2017 when his beloved wife of over four decades, Carlyn Rosser, passed away unexpectedly. For years, the actor believed he would never recover from the heartbreak.

He thought his days of love and romance were behind him, and he resigned himself to a life of solitude. But sometimes, life has a way of surprising us when we least expect it. In his seventies, when he had long accepted the idea of being a widower, Patrick Duffy found love again in the most unexpected way.
A Love That Stood the Test of Time

Patrick Duffy’s life took a beautiful turn when he met Carlyn Rosser during his senior year of college. She was a talented ballet dancer, performing with the First Chamber Dance Company of New York. She was also ten years older than him, but their age difference meant nothing compared to the deep connection they felt.

Duffy fondly recalled the moment he met her. “I was an immature college graduate touring as a narrator with this dance production, and she was a beautiful ballerina ten years older,” he said with a smile. “We met on the tour bus, and that was it—for life.”

Their love story moved quickly, and in 1974, they got married in a Buddhist temple. Carlyn introduced him to Buddhism, and it became a guiding force in both their relationship and his personal growth. That same year, they welcomed their first son, Padraic, into the world. Life was simple yet full of love.
To support his growing family, Duffy worked as a carpenter while pursuing acting in New York. It wasn’t an easy road, but Carlyn always stood by his side, believing in him even when things got tough. He took small acting jobs, including Off-Broadway productions, before his career took a major turn.

A Rising Star and a Stronger Bond
In the late 1970s, things started to change for Patrick Duffy. After working as a house painter to make ends meet, he landed the lead role of Mark Harris in the television series Man from Atlantis. But it was in 1978 that his life truly transformed—he was cast as Bobby Ewing in the hit TV show Dallas.

The role made him a household name, and as his career soared, so did his family life. Around the same time, he and Carlyn welcomed their second son, Conor, completing their beautiful family.

Their love grew stronger over the years, but in 1986, a devastating tragedy struck. Duffy’s parents were murdered during a robbery at their tavern in Boulder, Montana. It was a horrifying and life-altering moment for the actor.
“When my parents were murdered, I went through all the emotions of the horrific event—shock, anger, and everything in between,” Duffy later shared. “But I never felt disconnected from them.”

He credited his Buddhist faith for helping him through the dark times. But above all, it was Carlyn who anchored him, holding him up when he felt like falling apart. With her support, he was able to heal, to keep going, to be the father his sons needed.
The Unimaginable Loss

For 43 years, Carlyn and Patrick were inseparable. They built a life full of love, laughter, and deep spiritual connection. But in 2017, the unthinkable happened—Carlyn passed away at the age of 77.
Duffy was blindsided by the loss. “It was a surprise when she passed. There was no indication. So that was the big adjustment,” he admitted. The pain was unbearable. He had lost the person who had been his best friend, his love, his guide in life.

Six months after her passing, Duffy shared his grief with the world. He took to social media and wrote, “On this day six months ago, my heart stopped, yet I live on as she wishes. We will be together eternally. Thank you for the love and concern.”
Though he had the support of his sons, he often felt like it was his responsibility to be strong for them. “My boys were there as stalwarts,” he said. “But I also realized that, as much as they were trying to hold me up, I’m probably more adjusted to this set of circumstances than they are.”

Despite the heartache, he found solace in the memories he and Carlyn had created together. “I feel close to her all the time,” he shared. “What I miss most is her touch.”
Even after two years, Duffy struggled to see himself as anything other than Carlyn’s husband. “I can hear her. I can see her. I know what she would expect of me, and I try and live up to that.”

For him, she was never truly gone. Her love and presence lingered, guiding him through life even after death. He believed he would live the rest of his years alone, carrying her memory with him. But fate had other plans.
An Unexpected Second Chance

By 2019, Patrick Duffy had settled into his life as a widower. He had accepted the quiet, the solitude, the absence of romantic love. He thought he had already lived his great love story. But then, something unexpected happened—he reconnected with actress Linda Purl.
It started simply. A conversation, a friendship. They had known each other for years but had never been close. However, as they began talking more, something clicked.

What started as friendly conversations soon turned into hours-long phone calls, laughter, and shared memories. Before they knew it, their bond deepened into something more.
Duffy was surprised by his own feelings. He hadn’t thought love was possible again. But there it was—growing, unfolding, making him feel alive in a way he hadn’t felt in years.

He realized something important: finding love again didn’t mean he was betraying Carlyn. It didn’t erase the love they had shared. If anything, she would have wanted him to be happy, to embrace life fully.
Duffy once believed his story ended with loss. But love had a way of rewriting the ending.
He found happiness again, proving that even after the deepest heartbreak, love has a way of finding us when we least expect it. And sometimes, it’s in the moments we least anticipate that we realize life still has so much left to offer.
A Love Rediscovered in an Unexpected Chapter
Patrick Duffy never thought he would find love again after the heartbreaking loss of his wife, Carlyn Rosser. They had spent over four decades together, and when she passed away in 2017, he believed that chapter of his life was over. He had accepted being a widower and thought his days of romance were behind him. But life has a way of surprising people, and in the most unexpected way, he found himself falling in love again.
At the age of 71, Duffy’s heart reopened when he reconnected with actress Linda Purl. Their romance wasn’t something either of them planned—it just happened naturally, during the quiet and uncertain times of the pandemic.

A Friendship Rekindled
Years before their love story began, Duffy and Purl had been nothing more than casual friends. They knew each other but never had a deep connection. Over time, they lost touch. But in 2020, fate brought them together again through a group text chain with a mutual friend. At first, it was just a friendly chat between old acquaintances, but as the weeks passed, the group conversations slowly faded, leaving only Duffy and Purl still talking.
What started as casual messaging soon turned into something much more. Night after night, they found themselves on long Zoom calls, talking for hours on end. Duffy later shared, “We Zoomed every single night for at least two to three hours. We talked about our lives, our past relationships, our passions. We even listened to music together. It was like we were dating, but from a distance.”
As time went on, their connection became undeniable. It was no longer just friendly conversation—it was something deeper, something real. Duffy knew he had to see Purl in person to truly know if what they had was as special as it felt. So, he made a bold decision. “I loaded up my car and drove 20 hours straight, all the way to her house, just to see if this was real,” he revealed.
When he arrived at Purl’s doorstep, there was no doubt in either of their minds. The moment they saw each other, it was clear—they were meant to be together. From that day forward, they were inseparable.
Purl later described their journey as “a very Victorian process” because they took their time getting to know one another before their relationship became romantic. It was old-fashioned in a way, and that made it even more special.
Duffy, who had never expected to fall in love again, admitted, “I never thought for a minute this would happen. I never thought I’d feel this way again.” But life had other plans for him, and he embraced them with an open heart.
Love On and Off the Screen
Their bond was so strong that they soon decided to bring it into their professional lives. In 2021, the couple starred in a television movie together, playing a married couple. It was an experience unlike any other for Duffy.
“It’s the first time in my entire career that I got up in the morning with my co-star and then walked to set holding hands,” he said. “The chemistry worked on-screen and off-screen. And just being together, not being afraid to show our love—it was amazing.”
Their relationship was different from the romances of their youth. There were no games, no uncertainties—just love, maturity, and deep understanding. “At this point in life, it’s all about her. How do I make her smile? How do I bring her joy?” Duffy said. “We’ve already learned from past relationships. We don’t have to go through the trial and error. It’s all positive, all love.”
For Purl, their love story was proof that life is full of unexpected blessings. “Life is full of surprises, both good and bad. Patrick and I weren’t looking for this. We didn’t expect it or see it coming when our paths crossed. But it found us,” she shared. “Never give up on love.”
A Love That Honors the Past
Duffy still holds deep respect and love for his late wife, Carlyn. He believes she would have wanted him to find happiness again. “I feel, quite honestly, that this is in line with what my wife would have wanted. We are meant to be happy in this life. When happiness presents itself, you should think about it, consider it—but don’t let it slip away if it feels right,” he said.

In a 2023 interview with Senior Planet, the couple opened up even more about their love story. When asked if they ever imagined finding love again, Duffy was honest. “I didn’t. I was 70, and I had a good 46-year marriage. I thought I was content. But then I realized, after months of talking with Linda, that just being content isn’t enough. Life is meant to be lived, to be full of love and joy.”
Purl, who had been married four times before, including a brief marriage to Desi Arnaz Jr., also hadn’t expected to find love again. “I was happy with my life in New York. I was busy, fulfilled. I certainly didn’t expect to find another life partnership or deep relationship.”

Duffy, with his trademark charm, added with a smile, “But she had no idea who she was dealing with!”
When asked what made their relationship work, Purl said, “Every love story is unique, but for us, laughter has been key. We laugh all the time. And we have so much in common.”

Duffy added, “At our age, we’ve already been through long relationships, so we don’t have to go through the whole beginning phase of figuring things out. When you find love later in life, you’re already on the final lap toward happiness—not stuck at the starting line.”

As for marriage, they’re in no rush, but Duffy isn’t ruling anything out. “Right now, our relationship is as deep and meaningful as any marriage I’ve ever had,” he said.
A Love That Keeps Growing

In November 2024, Purl shared a sweet photo of her and Duffy on Instagram. They were smiling, enjoying their travels in Italy, soaking in every moment of happiness together. Fans flooded the comments with love and admiration. “Gorgeous couple! ♥️” one person wrote. Another added, “Such cuties! ❤️”

Patrick Duffy’s journey is proof that love doesn’t end—it evolves. His first love, Carlyn, will always be a part of him. But finding love again with Linda Purl has given him a new chapter filled with joy, laughter, and companionship.
Duffy’s story is a beautiful reminder that love can come into your life when you least expect it. No matter how much time has passed or how much loss you’ve endured, there is always hope for a new beginning.
