The Underestimated Predators
When we talk about dangerous animals, our minds often jump to lions and wolves prowling the wilderness.
But there’s another predator that often goes unnoticed amidst our urban landscapes: the coyote.
Coyotes are a common sight in many cities and suburbs, and while they typically avoid adult humans, their potential for aggression towards pets and children should not be overlooked.
A Cautionary Note for Pet Owners and Parents
The presence of coyotes in our neighborhoods means that pet owners and parents need to stay vigilant. Pets, especially smaller ones, are at risk when left unsupervised outdoors.
Likewise, young children playing outside should always have adult supervision to prevent any unfortunate encounters with these wild animals.
Expert Advice on Dealing with Coyotes
The Urban Coyote Research Project offers valuable guidelines for dealing with encounters with coyotes.
One important rule is never to feed them, as this can cause them to lose their fear of humans. If you do come face to face with a coyote, running away isn’t the best option. Instead, stand your ground, make noise, yell, or even throw something to scare them off.
Understanding Coyote Behavior
Coyotes are primarily active at night, making nighttime encounters more likely. Keeping pets indoors during these hours can reduce the risk of encounters with these nocturnal hunters. However, daytime sightings are also possible, and they can be particularly concerning because coyotes seen during the day may be less afraid of humans.
Coyote Attacks on Humans: A Rare but Real Threat
While attacks on humans by coyotes are rare, they do happen. Studies have documented around 160 attacks in the United States and Canada from the 1980s to 2003, with most victims being children. Attacks often occur during the coyotes’ breeding season, from March to August.
A Terrifying Incident in Los Angeles
A chilling example of this danger unfolded in a Los Angeles neighborhood where a coyote had been spotted for months. The situation reached a critical point when a 2-year-old girl was attacked by what was believed to be the same coyote in December.
A Father’s Brave Response
The attack occurred on December 2, as Ariel Eliyahuo returned home with his daughter Ariya from daycare. In a split second, a coyote pounced on Ariya in their yard. Reacting swiftly, Eliyahuo rushed to his daughter’s aid, throwing a water bottle at the coyote to fend it off.
The Aftermath and Ongoing Vigilance
Following the attack, Ariya received medical treatment, including rabies shots. Local authorities launched a search for the aggressive coyote, underscoring the importance of caution and awareness in areas where coyotes roam. Ariel Eliyahuo’s courageous actions undoubtedly prevented a more severe outcome for his daughter.
It’s crucial to spread awareness about the potential dangers posed by coyotes in urban areas. By sharing this information with friends and family, we can help keep our communities safe from these often underestimated predators.
