Six-year-old Harley is not typically known as a lifeguard. However, the courageous dog embarks on a rescue mission that captivates the internet (and, of course, his owner).
He saves a fawn from certain drowning and then cares for its well-being like a mother. The way the little deer thanks him is simply adorable.
Where is Harley?
One afternoon in Culpeper, Virginia, his owner Ralph Dorn wonders, “Where is Harley?” The dog has simply disappeared behind his house by the lake. Ralph searches for Harley for minutes until he sees him about 60 meters from the shore, swimming in the middle of the lake.
But Harley is not alone. A little fawn is swimming very close to him, fighting for its life in the lake!
“I’m not sure how the fawn got in there, but Harley certainly didn’t ask why; he just acted,” praises Ralph for his four-legged companion’s efforts.
Like a caring mother
Heroically, the dog swims to the fawn and tries to pull the small animal out of the water. Ralph comes to the aid of this mismatched pair. With the combined efforts of man and dog, they pull the soaking wet fawn out of the lake and lay it on the lawn.
And then the incredible happens. Like a caring mother, Harley begins to lick the fawn until it is dry and refuses to leave its side!
“Harley was reluctant to leave the fawn. He continued to stay in contact, kissing and caring for it,” describes Ralph.
Soon, Mama Deer appears, and Ralph retreats with Harley to give them space.
The fawn comes back
But that’s not the end of it, much to the surprise of Ralph’s family. The next morning, Harley is visibly excited, running around the house.
“When I opened the door, I heard the fawn bleating,” Ralph tells.
Immediately, Harley runs to the fawn crouching in the bushes, and the two share a moment full of wagging tails and nose kisses.
After the emotional reunion, they peacefully part ways. Apparently, the fawn just wanted to thank its savior one more time.
After that, the two never see each other again. However, countless enthusiastic Facebook users share the video of the rescue mission hundreds of times, immortalizing Harley as a hero.
