Misha and Jerry couldn’t stop smiling. Their gender reveal party was finally here—a moment they’d dreamed about for two long years. After countless doctor’s appointments, emotional highs and lows, and moments of doubt, they were expecting their baby. The excitement in the air was electric as friends and family gathered around, their faces beaming with joy.
“We made it,” Jerry said, pulling Misha into a hug. His voice was full of emotion. “This is the beginning of forever.”
Misha smiled, her eyes shining with happiness. Everything was perfect. The house was filled with colorful decorations—pink and blue balloons, banners, and streamers. The food was laid out, and the centerpiece was the cake. It wasn’t just any cake. Jerry’s mom, Nancy, had promised it would be special—it would reveal whether they were having a boy or a girl.
“I’ll take care of everything,” Nancy had said, her face full of excitement. “I just know it’s a girl! I can’t wait to spoil her!”
The day was bright, filled with laughter and cheer. Misha’s mom had even pitched in, helping set up the decorations. Everything seemed perfect, and then Nancy arrived. But there was something odd about her outfit. She was dressed all in black—a strange choice for such a joyous occasion, but no one thought much of it at the time. The mood was cheerful, and anticipation hung in the air.
Misha and Jerry stood together, ready to cut the cake. Phones were out, cameras were rolling, and everyone was counting down.
“Three… two… one!”
They cut into the cake with a loud cheer, but as the first slice was lifted, the room went completely silent. Instead of the expected pink or blue, the inside of the cake was black. No color. Just black, deep and mysterious.
Everyone stared in confusion. Jerry and Misha exchanged a glance, their excitement quickly turning into bewilderment. Whispers filled the air, and the joyous atmosphere crumbled in an instant.
Misha’s eyes landed on Nancy. Now, her all-black outfit made sense, but what didn’t make sense was the tears streaming down Nancy’s face. She looked devastated, as if the weight of the world was on her shoulders.
“Nancy, what’s going on?” Misha asked, her voice shaking.
Nancy hesitated, wiping her eyes with trembling hands. She took a deep breath before speaking, her voice barely above a whisper. “I’m so sorry. I didn’t know what else to do… I had to.”
Jerry stepped forward, his expression a mix of confusion and concern. “Mom, what are you talking about? Why is the cake black?”
Nancy let out a shaky sigh, clearly struggling. “Ten years ago, I went to a fortune teller with my sister. She told me something I couldn’t forget. She said that if my first grandchild was a boy, it would destroy your life, Jerry, and bring illness to me.”
The room gasped collectively. Misha’s jaw dropped. She couldn’t believe what she was hearing. Jerry was in shock.
“Mom, you’ve believed this for ten years?” Jerry asked, his voice trembling. “Over something a fortune teller said?”
Nancy nodded, tears streaming down her cheeks. “I know it sounds crazy, but I was terrified. Everyone said she was always right. I thought if I made the cake black, maybe it would stop the curse. I even baked bay leaves into it, hoping to change the future.”
Misha stood frozen, her mind spinning. She rubbed her temples, trying to take it all in. “So, you let a superstition ruin our gender reveal?” she asked, her voice cracking with frustration.
Just then, Jerry’s cousin Megan, who had been quietly scrolling on her phone, suddenly spoke up. “Wait a minute… was the fortune teller’s name J. Morris?”
Nancy’s eyes widened. “Yes, that’s her!”
Megan quickly pulled up an article on her phone and showed the room. “She was exposed as a fraud years ago. She made a fortune off people’s fears. She was a con artist.”
Nancy’s face fell as the truth hit her like a wave. “All these years…” she whispered, clutching her chest in disbelief. “I’ve been scared for nothing.”
Jerry ran his hand through his hair in frustration. “Mom, you let this ruin such an important moment.”
Nancy was crying now, sobbing softly. “I’m so sorry. I never wanted to ruin your day. I just didn’t know how to let go of the fear.”
Despite everything, Misha’s heart softened. She could see how much pain Nancy was in. Walking over to her, she gently placed her hand on Nancy’s. “It’s okay, Mom. Now we know the truth. You can enjoy the rest of this pregnancy with us, no more worries.”
Nancy looked up, tears in her eyes, and nodded. “Thank you, Misha. I’m so sorry.”
Jerry let out a small, almost nervous laugh. “Wait… does this mean we’re having a boy?”
The room erupted into laughter, breaking the tension. Even Nancy managed a small smile through her tears. Megan, quick to capture the moment, snapped a picture of the cake. “This is going on Instagram—#GothBabyReveal,” she joked.
Despite the unexpected twist, the party carried on. Everyone grabbed a slice of the black cake, laughing about the weirdest gender reveal anyone had ever seen. It wasn’t what Misha and Jerry had imagined, but with love, laughter, and family around them, it still felt perfect.
Now, all they had to do was wait for their baby to arrive—and they were ready for whatever the future would bring.
